Maybe that's why I'm so reluctant to start counting calories and points or whatever. It's not a lifestyle choice I want to keep up.
I actually passed up rolled tacos today with my mother-in-law and ate the salad-like garnish only instead. She had bought them from one of her favorite taco stands, and they come five-to-a-plate, mounded high with shredded lettuce and chopped tomatoe, onion, shredded cheese, and guacamole. The salad was delicious, and I honestly didn't miss the taco part all that much. I think I can do the no bread thing.

Nonetheless, you may want to do it for a short period of time, especially if you are having trouble losing. It can be incredibly eye-opening. In my experience, most people eat far more calories, far less veggies, and exercise far less than they think they do.
When you write it all down (whether its points or calories or just a food journal with no "counting" at all) it's all there in black and white. You can study it and maybe discover something that might help you get past a hurdle.

channluv--
Does he still eats rice, oats and other grains? Or did he eliminate gluten all together?
Reesha, I did have a reading of near diabetes 2 --1.5 yrs. ago. I was retested, and supposedly it's false. But I plan to get retested on a better test later for more accurate results.
So rather than wait around, I reduced my intake of white rice or bread. When I have rice, I try to have brown or red rice.. So rice intake these days..is about once a wk. or so. I have less than 1 c. of oatmeal with abit of milk for breakfast nearly daily. Then I go cycling.
When I eat too much rice and bread at the end of the day, I feel "wrong". I do still have pasta, but "lighter" tasting pasta which tends to be certain Asian pastas.
So I still have sushi, I just don't eat it as often...and when I do, it is a "treat" to me which means I make sure it is freshly made sushi.
I discussed this with a sister who is a doctor and who lost 50 lbs., which included jogging, change of diet and reduction of white rice, bread, etc. Eaten less or eaten earlier in the day for you to burn it off.

Yeah I hear you-- I can really only do it during the summers when I'm not teaching-- or doing much of anything!!!
I am also capable of having all kinds of discipline for about 2 weeks and then I get bored with what I'm doing. At least I generally eat pretty well!
Shootingstar-- doesn't it always seem like a lot of work cutting out all that stuff at first? I always sink back on that stuff, particularly when it's that time of the month. It's like the easy fall back thing! It stores nicely, cooks without much of a fuss... I just need to keep faster and healthier stuff around when I want to feel full.
Watermelon has been doing a really nice job of keeping me full lately! Oh summer, how I love thee.

I'm doing Ride the Rockies next week, so I'll do an official weigh-in afterwards. I do NOT want to start this trip with an actual scale number in my head - I want to think I can fly up the hills. If the scale doesn't give me a happy number, I'll be slugging up the hills, beating myself up.

I have been having a hard time the last two weeks...even though I am still riding my bike I have really felt horrible. I have been having a hard time with the neurapathy pain (especially in my legs but also my hands/arms)
when I am in pain I take pain medication and I CRAVE sweets.....omg I do not want to leave them alone. It is not from the exercise that I am hurting....I rode a 17 mile ride yesterday....its the dang nerve pain.
I was lucky during my triathlon training to not have to many rough days but as the weather is getting hotter (and I think its related to the humidity) I just feel horrible. Oh well.... I shall push on through this one tooo

I'd just be careful not to overcompensate for calories burned... I always do that on days with long rides. I gleefully justify a big indulgent meal with "I just rode 70 miles I can eat whatever I want!!! :D"

It's not helping that my doc says I'm banned from riding more than 20 miles. Ummm....lemme think about that. No. I'm ignoring that advice. It's a doc who doesn't get exercise at all. If he had his way, I would have done no exercise for the last 6 weeks.

Nothning life-threatening. Just stupid testosterone, actually.
My H sliced his finger open yesterday afternoon but it took until 10 pm last night before I could convince him that he needed stitches. He was still bleeding so profusely that he couldn't drive. Lucky me!
And he's in a jolly mood (not!) because yesterday was his first day of 5 days off in a row to finish painting our house and building our wood shed...none of which he's allowed to do now. Ugh.

Wow - LeeBob and I went out for sushi dinner last night. I was good for the most part and stuck with sashimi and avoided the rice. Except I had to have a slice of the Rock & Roll my husband ordered (it's like a crabmeat & avocado California roll, but with grilled eel instead of crabmeat)
It worked out to a tasty and filling and reasonably low-points meal (I'm on WW so everything is in points for me).
Here's how I figured it, using the points lookup function on the WW web site:
1/2 cup edamame beans (before shelling) = 0.5 points
1 cup miso soup = 2 points
10 pieces of tuna sashimi @ 1 pt / 4 pcs = 2.5 points
An order of sunomono salad with a bit of crab on top, which I estimated at 2 points
(sunomono salad is very thinly sliced cucumber with slightly sweetened rice wine vinegar. Technically the cucumber is 0 points, but with the combo of the sweetening and the crabmeat I'm giving it 2 points, which is probably an overestimate)
1 piece of my husband's Rock & Roll = 1.5 points
(like a California roll but with eel instead of crab) - I'm giving it the points for 2 pieces to be on the safe side since it also had tobiko (flying fish eggs) and it was an inside-out style roll with extra rice.
This worked out to about 8.5 points for a really delicious and filling meal -- that's not bad for a dinner out.
The sunomono salad in particular was very filling and tasty with the loads of cucumber. I'm not a huge fan of cucumber, but when it's very thinly sliced like that it's really good.
My daily points allowance is 19 points, not counting the extra 35 points per week for splurging and such, and not counting the activity points I get (2 points for 30-45 minutes of moderate effort on my trainer, which is the best I can do right now). So a sashimi dinner ain't bad in the scheme of things.
Wow was this geeky WW post boring or what ? :D

Heh heh.
And since we were talking about donuts earlier, for a little perspective I looked up the points value of a cream (excuse me, kreme )-filled donut with chocolate icing from Krispy Kreme.
9 points, more than my entire sashimi dinner.
A simpler donut would be on the order of 5-7 points. :p
Just sayin'

My main problem is that I am facing some medical tests this week which may turn out to be minor or may be very serious. I spent way too much time trying to prepare myself for the procedures with some research and of course most of the information you find is on the worst case scenario. Let's just say my anxiety level has led to quite a bit of mindless eating. The great thing is that my must serene moments are on a bike - it is simply impossible to worry about too much else when you are attempting to keep up with the pack or climb a hill.

Thanks, jobob! :)
Long Island, NY is really beautiful - very different than I expected. Lots and lots of lovely orchards, fields, grasslands, and orchards. And very, very flat.
I ended up only doing 80 miles. My good friend "bonked" at exactly 80 miles and I stopped to take care of her. By the time I was sure that she was okay, it was too late to finish.
But that's okay - I still had a ball and I feel good that I helped out a friend.

Hope you have a great trip!!
PS I finally treated myself to a real road bike!!!!
Congratulations on the new bike! Pictures?
I can hardly wait to get back to mine, but Waikiki is beautiful, there's a two-mile walking path to the foot of Diamond Head just outside our hotel, and I'd like to think I'm working off the buffet breakfasts by swimming in the ocean every day, but to be honest, floating is not much of a challenge, and I don't think treading water uses up that many calories.
I had my first-ever margarita tonight at Duke's, along with a great grilled mahi mahi sandwich and a basket of fries, while watching the surfers out in front of the hotel while this great duo played awesome beach bar music. It was a great date. And there was this guy there that I'd swear was Woody Harrelson. He was, um, really enjoying the music, let's just say.
I won't be weighing in this week, but only because I don't have a scale hand. Yeah, that's it. No scale. Ha!

I didn't try very hard this week either. Life keeps getting in the way. But weighed in at 211.6. Seems I'm doing ok on the eating front, just haven't had time or energy for any decent exercise. I'm hoping the energy levels will soon be up. I'm starting vitB injections today which should help with the fatigue. Then lots of hiking planned for the week-end with my dad which should kick start my exercise again.

Sorry for the delay. I was out of town for a retirement party for my brother-in-law. While there it seems I drank a cup full of glass shards and fire. Well, at least it feels that way in my throat and esophagus. UGH. On the plus side, can't really eat anything. :) Minus side, I feel HORRIBLE.
I added in the updates, and took you off Lynette, not a problem, totally understand the need for a break! ANd I also know the feeling of - I lose a pound, then a gain a couple back. I even brought it up with my dr this last week and she sort of just shrugged her shoulders. It just isn't making much sense to me, so I have to figure this out to make any headway!

Is there any way to access the spreadsheet other than signing in to Google? In the past, I've not had a problem--created an account, username, password. However, for the past week, I haven't been able to access. I've contacted Google 2x already with no response. I tried to create a new account and I get a message stating that an account has already been created with my specific e-mail address.
Any suggestions other than creating another e-mail address?

I will admit to not being the most knowledgeable about the google docs. But I think you should be able to get in there since it is set for "everyone". But I really don't know. So I assume the issue is that you can't get in with your email due to the wrong password? Is there no way to get them to send you your password, or am I missing something. Sorry, I'm not a lot of help. :)

OK, I really don't understand it, since it is set that people should be able to view it without signing in. I just logged myself out of google docs, clicked the link in my post above, and it brought me to the spreadsheet. So you should be able to view it without signing in and I'm not sure why you can't. Again, keeping in mind that I'm good at typing in the numbers, and work with regular Excel all the time. But it was this challenge that brought me to the google docs and I'm still really quite the novice. :(

Forgot to post my weight for last Saturday: 172.1
I've given up dieting and I'm working on learning how to eat normally using the concepts/steps in the book "Normal Eating for Normal Weight". Right now, my goal is not to gain any weight as I learn this...so I'm ok with this past weeks weight and I expect to be the same (or so) for next week.
If there were more time left, I'd probably ask to drop out of this challenge because I'm removing the whole 'diet' concept from my life. :)
I am also trying to get in more formal exercise. I've been biking fairly regularly (thanks, Susan!), but I haven't been very good at getting in the necessary weight lifting. That's my goal for this next week...complete at least ONE full body weight training session.

Even with all the abundant Hawaiian buffet breakfasts, I'm at 245. Wahoo!
I swam every day, snorkeled, walked a lot on deep-sandy beaches (those are tiring!), and even paddled an outrigger canoe. It was a blast. Also got some quality time in with D*H, which was nice. We never really had a honeymoon.
I was so proud of our daughter. She's 11 and a month ago wasn't comfortable swimming across a lap pool for a swim test. It took her three tries before they let her pass. This last week, though, she was swimming in open ocean with sea turtles and all kinds of fish, not just a little bit, but with abandon. She loved it. She's even talking about being a marine biologist one day. She's so into animals. I think she grew about an inch this last two weeks, too. Hawaii was good for her.
It was good for all of us.

But I just heard from my neuro Dr, and, nooooooooooo, he wants me to keep wearing the g-d brace until after my final CT scan on Monday and after I see him for what I hope to be our final appt, which is not until freakin' July 8.

Not totally sure if it's "real" weight as it doesn't seem I could have gained that much that fast given that I haven't seriously fallen off the wagon or anything.
I also did just get a new scale which seems more accurate than the old one (measures in .2 lb increments and when I weigh myself three times in a minute, it gives me the same response each time, unlike the old one, which could never really settle on a weight)...

I am fed up with losing .5 pound, putting on 2, losing another .25, and doing this over and over. I am also tired of eating just because it is 7 AM, and I might get hungry in the next hour, but I am not really hungry now. I was away at the Pacific Crest Triathlon this weekend, so I didn't have a chance to weigh on Friday. I ate like a horse all weekend, stuff I normally don't (can you say chocolate cake, and almond joy ice cream in a waffle cone?? ), along with larger thannormal portion sizes all weekend, so I was a bit afraid to step on the scale this morning. But all is well at 128.5, so I guess I burned off enough to offset all the good food we ate in the past 4 days.
I'll continue to shoot for that 125 goal in the next challenge as well, but in the meantime, I'm quite happy that I've been able to maintain at a pound or so below my Weight Watchers goal.

Sorry for the delay ladies. I was in Puerto Rico for a science meeting (not a bad way to spend a few days). I managed to run a few times, but no biking or swimming. And given the whole resort thingy, not very good with my eating. Not looking forward to my next weigh in!
I'll get the page set up for the next 2 month challenge over the holiday weekend. Look for a thread to be started for July/August and let me know who all is playing along again for another 8 weeks!

Didn't weigh in last week because germy-germs kept me away from the gym. This week cruel hormones have me up to 66.2kgs again. I'm sure next week's numbers will be much more bearable.

Same goal for me as well... 148!
Also can you make a spot on the spread sheet for measurements way off to the right? I'd love to have a place to track them.

final weight.... 248.2!!!!
I am so excited because I thought for sure with the lack of exercise and a little stress eating (because of the red area that we still do not know for sure if its the lymphedema, celulitis - because of the lyphedema or the cancer returning) that I had went back up over 250.
My next goal is 240.
thanks for keeping the stats!

Back to 141.... I think I'll sit out the next one. I'm starting to work with a nutritionist next week to try and figure out why I cannot lose weight despite eating well and riding my bike every day. Very frustrating!!

Still at 155.5 but I've been slacking off a bit so that's fine.
I made it to w/in a half-pound from my goal for this challenge so it's all good.
And even more important, my pants are comfy again.
Thanks PG!

129.5 today. Lots of stress in my family this week and hardly ate so that is good. I will be going on my long bike ride in August but will stay on this thread....with this start weight and 125 as the goal. Thanks Possegal for all your hard work.

I weighed in yesterday, down to
202.4
Finally made a dent. Woo-hooo! I took a break from the diet last night to celebrate our anniversary. I had a grilled peach salad, spinach and goat cheese gnocchi, and berry shortcake. And a tall glass of wine. YUMMMM. Back on the plan today.

Updated for yesterday! Congrats to those that reached or were close to their goals. You all really do inspire me. All of you do, actually. Everyone's attitude really helps me keep trying!
Tina - good luck with the outcome of your tests. I understand a bit that anxiety. My sister scans every 4 months and we live in 4 month intervals of cycling stress. I'm praying for a good outcome for you!
Limewave - you made me hungry, that sounds like a great meal. Happy Anniversary!

I'm in for the next round. Weighed 144 again yesterday. My goal for next time is 140. That will be my official Weight Watchers goal!
And, then I'm gonna shoot for another 10 below that--don't care how long it takes me.

178.8. I'm in for the next round and the next one and the one after that and the one after that.
Possegal thank you again for taking the time to do all the charting. The weight loss challenge has become an invaluable tool in my weight loss. When I am struggling with my weight loss coming here and seeing that I have lost weight has really helped with the mental/emotional part and I am losing weight so thank you.

I've been a drop-out for several weeks, hoping that staying off the scale might help. Nope. 138 yesterday. I've added a day of weight lifting per week, so I'm now at three days. I'm sitting here wearing a pair of shorts that used to be more snug in the waist. So I'm happy with that.
Still looking for the ever illusive 129. Maybe this time...

A little late, but my goal was to be at 147 on July 3 and I made it to 145.5! Count me in for July/August. Let's see......how about to 135 on August 31? Good luck to all. It goes on a lot easier than it comes off.

My goal for Aug 31 is 149 lbs -
As in, I would really like not to see that 50 lb weight on the Drs scale move over to the 3rd notch ... :D

I think we have determined it to be my cycling and the new position on a road bike vs a hybrid.
By the time I road on Friday morning 90% of the redness had gone. I road 30 miles friday and then came home to get on my special lymphedema pump, I road 21 miles on saturday but due to it being the 4th of July as well as my husbands birthday I didn't user my machine, and today I did 24 miles and by tonight I have a nice distinct red area again. I will use my machine here shortly and hopefully it will go away again!
I am NOT stopping riding! Do they make bib shorts for woman?
