Ladies, its time to put your thinking caps on and get creative!
It has been a couple of years since we produced a TE-branded cycling jersey and we'd like to come up with something very creative with a high "WOW" factor, but we haven't come up with anything ourselves that we absolutely love.
So... we're going to have a design contest!
We recognize that not everyone has the skills to create vector artwork suitable for use as final art, so what we're looking for is something more along the lines of a concept sketch that we can then take to the designers at our jersey manufacturer to be cleaned up and turned into final art.
1st Prize will be your very own 2009 TE Jersey + $50 TE Gift Certificate
- winner to be selected by TE
- (note: final jersey design may not make use of the winning design. If no jersey is produced before July 2009, winner will receive a $125 TE Gift Certificate)
2nd Prize "People's Choice" award will be a $50 TE Gift Certificate
- winner to be selected by a poll here on the TE forums.
- this may be the same as the 1st prize winner.
We'll let it run at least 2 weeks but possibly through the end of February depending on how much activity there is surrounding the contest.
I'll put a link up tomorrow to a page where TE logos and color swatches can be downloaded.
We're looking forward to seeing what the amazing gals of the TE forums come up with! :D

Sounds coolio but I do have one question.
Is this open to US residents ony? :(
If not..let me go and bother an artist..

ahem, Biciclista.
Salsa , you don't have to have the mad skillz like Mimi. If you can do a mediocre rough sketch with shapes and graphic placement I think that will do.
This is more in the graphics/visualization area.

I'm actually not much of a designer; but it will be fun to try.

Yeah, I know. But she also has some really great bike paintings that I have always thought would MAKE good jersey designs. So...we'll see.

Just a note for when you actually choose the lucky winner and produce the jersey.
I bought the previous TE jersey, but it never fit correctly, as it didn't come in my actual size and it had elastic on the bottom.
It would be great if it was available in a large range of sizes (XS-3X), with no elastic.
Thanks!

We haven't decided yet, but it will probably be a 3/4 hidden zip.

Full zip would be nice but it absolutely has to have no elastic at the bottom!

I think they posted the graphics info for those who can do that, but they are clearly not requiring anything more than a good concept sketch.

Of course a good concept is really the hardest part in graphic design! ;)
Thanks for posting the .ai format in cs2 - some of us can't afford to upgrade every stinking year as adobe keeps creating new suites.
Will think for a few days and then come up with something. :-)

Well that's great news for those on TE who don't do graphic design. Sort of levels the playing field, p'raps. ;)
And I only asked my question about the full zip from a design perspective...wanted to know if a zipper could potentially cut a design in half.
I'm pretty sure I have a jersey with a full zip that doesn't affect the design.

That depends on how you design it....
...and how you wear it.

I can kinda envision Mimi's painting (posted on the other jersey design thread) all over the back of a jersey with some kind of continuation or even just a repeat wrapping to the front. Could have short sleeves in blue-with-logo in extension of the sky (which is already predominantly a blue very close to the TE bluelogo color). The sleeves could be plain blue-with-logo or could fade above the logo into a more water-color effect up towards the shoulder seam. And the grassy bit of the painting could be right at the top of the back pockets, especially if Mimi could do a continuation below that with some sort of trail-side vegetation.
In my mind's eye this is a gorgeous jersey. I'd definitely buy it, but I can't draw it.

Someone should be able to save the CS2 AI files to a previous version of Illustrator. I couldn't access the files with the provided link though. Is it just me or does the link not work? I just get a blank screen. :(

Hey y'all! I got Trek420 message... not sure if I'm in on this or not as I'm trying to get a book to press, however I know a fine designer that might want to play.
I will ask her if she has an interest. Meanwhile, I'll download the templates just in case I get a wild burst of time.
Good luck everybody!

me too. I think they want a design using the colors they showed and incorporating their logo.
While a design the incorporates the TE color scheme would be nice, it is certainly not a requirement.
The TE logos can be more of something that is applied to certain locations on the jersey - ie, chest or collar, sleeves, back pocket, etc -- they don't necessarily have to be a prominent part of the design.
If the design was of a traditional "team" jersey style, the logos would be very prominent (see the Team Terry jersey (http://www.terrybicycles.com/detail.html?item_no=2650&c=Apparel)).
However, we want to be more creative than that, while still having a jersey that communicates "Team Estrogen", rather than just "that's a pretty jersey".

If you use it, you might want to check with one of the chemists on the board to verify that I grabbed the right symbol. We think I did (actually DH is the source), but it could turn out like people who get tatoos of chinese characters only to find out that they don't mean what they think :p

NO!!! I want my jersey be form fitting and to stay put and that means gripper elastic at the bottom.... and darn it I want it at the arms too... tight enough to keep my arm warmers up please.

I've noticed that jerseys made for men with elastics don't fit me so good, but when they are styled for women, the jersey ends up looking good and staying where it belongs with that elastic on it.

Ladies, thanks for the feedback. A couple of comments:
I expect this will be a 3/4 hidden zip, no elastic jersey. Hidden zips work best with a graphic design, as they don't "chop" the image in half. There's very little out there in full-length hidden zip, so we'll need to do 3/4.
Also, as much as I understand that some folks like hi-viz safety yellow, that's not really the direction we're looking to go in.

And longer short sleeves that will actually cover the tops of arm warmers. No little cap sleeves!
I love gripper elastic. My favorite jersey has gripper elastic in the back and is elastic-free in the front- stays put without riding up.

I am not sure why she would track that, it would be senseless.
I like elastic. I don't like elastic. I like full zip and I like 3/4, I even like 1/2 zip. Pretty much a good cut will make me happy and elastic won't bug me in a good cut.

On the women's club cut - it will have no elastic in the hem, a slightly shorter length, and will flare a bit at the hips. The bust will be adjusted slightly to better accomodate our curves. I tried on prototype #2 on Monday and it fits really nicely. Sizing info can be found at www.voler.com.

So far, of all the jerseys shown, i like the last one of Eden's the best, because it's sort of colorful. I realize there is a giant difference between the younger generation and mine in terms of color. I like it bright; and particularly on a bike. Those muted tones do nothing for me.

on the back? I've always wanted a jersey that said that, since I get so many people telling me to "Get on the sidewalk" as they drive by.
Otherwise I love Mimi's painting and Urlea's conversion of that into a jersey, although perhaps the bike girl on the back might be good, since that's what most people will see.
My DH also came up with a slogan - Cars Suck Gas - but that might just be more inflammatory than unprotected cyclists want to risk...

This is a FAB jersey - I would for sure buy this-- female without being girly and 'butterflies and flowers'=ish--
I also look for the second cyclist on this jersey... the front of the design is beautiful-- it would be AMAZING if the rest of the second cyclist was wrapped around on the back - still showing some shoreline, but giving a bit more interesting design on the rear - which as someone pointed out - is what most people see... perhaps not black for the pockets though - our rear ends ware what traffic behind us sees so something colourful at the bottom - even the same design as the real jersey would work a little better imho so we dont just present black shorts and black lower back as our visibility to motorists...? Even if this jersey was on sale 'as is' - I would buy it - like I said female without being girly--
excellent work ladies!

it looks like we may have a winner already do you think...???
this one appeals to a variety of types of women cyclists, both the pastel wearers and the geometric 'bold' types-- and it is really different to the usual stuff and especially being a cooperative work between two 'sistahs' on here - i would be really proud to wear this one! :-)
miss susan-the-administrator - whoever you declare the 'winner' - please produce this design anyway- i think you would have a lot of takers.
... with elastic at the bottom!!!! :-)
(maybe elastic for smalls and mediums who do need it, and no-elastic for large and extra-large sizes-- is that possible at all????)

Same problem with the handle bars and part of the wheel for the second cyclist on the front panel. I can tilt the image a little bit which brings forward more of that, but then you end up with the face getting to close to the zipper & I'd worry about it looking warped.
If this gets chosen I'm sure the people at TE will be able to get things spaced just right for you. :)

It's beautiful. I'd buy one even knowing that it'll be a rare occasion when I go out without my hi-viz yellow.
I only wonder if the image could be re-sized or moved a little bit (or at least mocked up on an inkjet print T-shirt transfer and tried on) because I'm afraid the rider's head will be right on or underneath the wearer's right breast.

I just *love* the mimi/urlea jersey too. I'd buy one, and I think you should give them both the prize! I think its great the way it is, although I too would prefer the full zip jersey in the cut of the team terry jersey. I really like that it captures the spirit of TE, by our own artists for us. I also like the yellow sleeves for visiblity, and the blue matches my bike. I also like that it is feminine without being 'girly' so should have broad appeal.

So far, of all the jerseys shown, i like the last one of Eden's the best, because it's sort of colorful. I realize there is a giant difference between the younger generation and mine in terms of color. I like it bright; and particularly on a bike. Those muted tones do nothing for me.
Color is probably the easiest thing to change on graphic jerseys.... takes a few clicks of a mouse button. (OK these are still a bit pastel, but you get the idea...)

what is wrong with a team jersey? isn't this supposed to be a team jersey? I'm confused...
I could be mistaken but I interpret this to mean she doesn't want one like the Team Terry jersey , just incorporating a logo and/or the name Team Estrogen.

I agree that the Voler club cut woman's jersey is the best I have. Besides the Amici Veloci one, I have one made for my husband's company. If you can replicate that cut (it's very form fitting, but no elastic) and actually offer an x small, I'm in...

My brain is dried up right now to think of anything to add on the design side.
But I will chime in..definitely have no elastic at bottom. I have several jerseys with an elastic bottom, only out of necessity because I was getting desperate with limited design choices off-the rack in town for women with no elastic bottoms.
I'm a short person with a small bone frame, perfect weight and even for me, elastic bottom jerseys don't complement my frame much. On days when I eat too much, I feel as if the elastic bottom is rounding out/accentuating my bloated tummy. ..which is precisely what happens to men with cycling jerseys with their bottom elastics and their belly paunches.
And elastics around short sleeves..nope. And I have skinny arms. Very annoying when elasticized sleeves slide into 'pits.
Like Mimi, I can't see the image offered by Eden.

+1 for no elastic. Especially on the arms. Too tight and uncomfortable, especially on long rides.
As for color, I think bright colors like orange and yellow are best, for safety reasons. Regular yellow is fine, doesn't have to be hi-vis. Blues and greens are less visible on the road, because they don't stand out as much.

I am an elastic lover - when I have all my stuff in my pockets, the elastic keeps the heavy pockets from drooping and bouncing on my butt. However, how hard would it be to add elastic to the bottom (on your own) of a non - elasticized jersey (Irulan, professional seamstress?) tokie

I just love it, great idea.
Some time ago I posted, why TE doesn't have theyr one team kit or jersey/shorts. The reaction of some members on this discussion forum for my loud thought, was not very positive... Soooo, I guess I was right... I see fantastic creations, love some of the bright colors and design.
Are we vote for the best jersey's or are you guy's doing this?

Jeff & I couldn't agree more. I suspect we'll end up with more than one, which means that we may be able to have more than one fit - one with no elastic and another full-zip with bottom elastic. We'll see. It's too early to decide, but I'm sending out for fit kits from several manufacturers so we can get the best possible fit to compliment these beautiful designs.
I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks for the compliments/input ladies! :D I can try a brighter color (last time I tried it wasn't quite working for me), but we'll see how a second try at it goes.
I probably wouldn't change the flower type to a sunflower though just because the "she loves me", "she loves me not" concept is typically done with a daisy and that's what I was going for with the "she loves hills, she loves them not".
Good to use one of my photos from Japan though. :) Glad you ladies liked where my mind went with it in the form of a Jersey.

I also like ttaylor's eye-catching green-to-red design, love the bike parts, but I'd like the "She Rides" graphic blended into the background more or tweaked a little. Centered, mayb?

I wasn't allowed access either
Hm? I wonder if NSA is somehow involved, shutting out web sites like they do in China ...? So I can see it from here in Norway, but nobody in the US can ..?
Anyhoo, if you google for images of wild sunflowers, it's the first one on the list. Or, just look at Oak Leaf's avatar. The one I googled is a photo with focus-fading and thus a bit more similar to Urlea's greytone (now also greentone) jersey design, but Oak Leaf's avatar does show that flowers at least very similar to the ones in the design do come in bright yellow. I get Urlea's point about daisies rather than sunflowers, but daisies aren't grey or green either. They do come white with bright yellow centers, so why not white with yellow centers and yellow background? Or just go with yellow because who cares about representational art anyway? ;)
and now, here's that picture:

My Amici Veloci jersey is my favorite because of the fit, but mainly of the design and colors. When I say ttaylor's jersey that is what I thought of first. I really like it. I love the saying in the back also.
I also like Urlea's jersey because of the petal idea.
Although I did not post before, every day I say a jersey that I thought was great. The choices are getting harder & harder to end up picking just one.

Urlea- I like the green, very calm. It is very hard to make it bright enough and still pretty. I am very fond of the design.
Grog- I am picturing a red Gerbera daisy- that would look really pretty but I don't think lends itself to Urlea's design with the words in the petals?

Mine are black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia). But the center part of Urlea's flowers does look more like sunflowers or black-eyed Susans than daisies (?)
Anyway I like the design and I think people will get the idea even if the flower species isn't exactly right. ;)

I would like to say that all of the design ideas are just gorgeous.
ttaylor- I was also thinking of the woman logo... but I thought of doing it with a chain ring. I'm not going to, because you did. Good idea though! I like the color and your layout on the jersey.
Biciclista - I love that painting!! Watercolor is beautiful.
The estrogen chemical chain is so clever.
Eden - the around the world concept is cool too.
I don't have a critique of any of them.
I am working on an image. So, hopefully this will stay open until the end of february. I hope to have something ready by the end of this coming weekend. I only have access to illustrator at work. I do have photoshop at home. It'll be a sketched idea, but probably not perfected.
oooh, this is so fun. I love having something to think about and work on for my own amusement at least! Gotta love a good project.

Leaning towards TTaylor designs--"she rides" in bright colors with black trim is my fav so far.

I like the pink!! I have a pink helmet and while often I get on the "no pepto pink" bus I also love bright pinks. My favorite jersey after my Amici Veloci is a BRIGHT PINK Primal Wear with flames so I like it!

Urlea- I like the green 'she loves hills' a lot... it's really fresh and I'd wear it to work if it was a normal tee...
Zen- I like how you have the swirl below boob level on the front- I think that'd be much more flattering
Mine's coming along nicely- I'm hoping to get it done this weekend, then you guys can help adjust colors and layout if need be!

I really like they way ttaylor, velowoman and Zen used the bold TE "swirly e" logos. Simple, yet striking. And the off-center placement works very well.

This is hands-down the nicest most flattering jersey I own.
Me too. And boo, I lost weight (which is good) and would love a size smaller. I love the look and feel so much I might have the dang thing tailored. ;)Aw, shucks, thanks.
I've been waiting to read this thread in its entirety so I wouldn't forget the early submissions (CRS syndrome, ya know?), so I just found your comments. Thanks, guys. :o

I was just thinking the same thing!
I guess it was only the "Submission" thread I should have been avoiding due to that "CRS" thing. There's some good stuff on there. I love the bright clear colors with sharp delineation - makes it so easy to comprehend design, words, logos, etc. But that said, the petals with "she loves hill" is pretty darn funny. We need one for rocks.:p

Based on your feedback on the fit of the Amici Veloce jerseys, I've ordered an entire fit kit of several Voler women's cuts to pass around the office for try on and opinions. (SadieKate, do you remember the name of the cut you went with?) The thing I like about Voler is that their women's jerseys run up to XXXL.
I'm ordering fit kits from several other vendors as well, for comparison.

I'm not SK but I'm pretty sure it was the Voler club cut.
Another great thing about the Amici Veloci jersey is the color. That bold red is highly visible over vast distances (I should know since I'm usually waaay off the back - and looking ahead I see teeny-tiny flashes of red :p)
While in everyday clothes I lean more towards the subtle/muted colors - and some of the color combos of the jerseys submitted are very tasteful and pleasing indeed!! - I personally think visibility on the road is of utmost importance.
The AV jersey shows that hi-viz need not necessarily mean screaming yellow, but bold graphics and strong/clear/contrasting colors do seem to be better for on the road visibility.
Just my two cents.

We did both cuts with Voler -- club or race. :)

Voler - HUGE range of sizes and style choices. Best armwarmers on the planet. :) I've heard some positive feedback on their shorts but haven't tried them yet. Unfortunately, their vest and jackets are only unisex (which I hate as a term; it's a men's cut).
First, we chose the SQ Pro fabric which is their "team" fabric and a bit more expensive, silky and luxurious compared to the Aries Micro Plus which is commonly used for "event" jerseys (I've got MS150 and the Little Red Riding Hood jerseys in the Aries Micro Plus).
2nd, we chose set-in sleeves. While loads of people love raglan, those with large shoulders and large busts get a better fit with set-in and the sleeve style had to be universal. My knitting design books even talk about not putting large busted women in raglan sleeves. Since the TE crowd is a wider mix of body types compared to a race team, it seemed a reasonable choice.
3rd, 3/4 length zipper was also a universal decision but we could have gone with full length. Either is great for those of us who wear bibs or overheat, and for the guys (have you seen how many guys like the Velo Bella jerseys and the "Ride Like a Girl" socks)?
Because this was a full custom jersey order, we did have flexibility with the cut. Everyone was able to pick whether they wanted a "race cut" or a "club cut." Race cut means slightly tighter, slightly shorter (have to keep the sponsor logos across the butt on your shorts visible), and have elastic. Club cut means a slightly more relaxed fit and better for an hour glass or hippy figure, and no hem elastic.
A couple of extra notes about Voler, you can put a "secret" message inside the collar. I'm in the club cut jersey in these photos. You can also see the inside of the collar (credits to Veronica's creativity).
http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b310/SadieKate/Amici%20Veloci%20jersey/
Last, because Voler has their retail line (velowear.com) and the team wanted a red jersey, I picked a red that matched their standard armwarmers. When we first ordered we weren't sure if we could get enough people to buy armwarmers to get custom, so choosing a color that would coordinate with a standard color from their retail line seemed a good option. Fortunately, it was a great color red. I'm just mentioning this because I'm not sure how extensive your project is. I love having matching armwarmers. It's like having a longsleeve jersey without the expense and better temp-management options during the ride. If you wanted, you could stock plain warmers in a matching color.
The sleeveless jerseys in this photo are race cut (though I've removed the elastic from mine and Jo hasn't - we're on the far right). The rest I think are club cut. I wish I looked as good as aka_kim(far left) in mine. :)

Jersey creep-up if there's elastic means it's too short or you're shapely (or both!) :p :D
My hips are 37/38" and my waist is about 29" and my jerseys still creep up if the elastic is a little too tight and it is a bit short (I have a long torso) :) I suspect this is why some of us think that elastic is evil!

I hope Velogirl chimes in because she has her jerseys made by Voler, too. These are similar to the AV jerseys in fit (club cut) but they are full zip. With the AV jerseys, my Velogirls jerseys are my favorites. It's a treat to wear them, so I have them for my long or "special" rides.
Who did the AV design? Whoever came up w/that design really should submit something (hinthint)---unless they already have and I haven't gotten to that thread yet.

Wow! There are so many cute ideas. I don't have a creative bone in my body, but I love, love, love the one by ttaylor508 that has the neon yellow, green and orange with the big gear graphic. I ride on busy roads where I want to be seen and the brighter, neon colors help me to stick out.
Also, no elastic and 3/4 zipper are my preferences. My elastic bottom jerseys all bunch up on my backside :o ...lovely.

I love this red gold and green jersey also with the big gear graphic- however the "she rides" I fear would get comments of an unwanted nature from passing motorists!!
I think the design stands by itself and does not need an words written on the upper back section where it currently says "she rides". The deisgn is strong enough that that is just an unwanted distraction for me. If those words were removed, I would be first in line to buy this jersey in both sleeved and sleeveless I think.
With elastic :-) doesnt have to have tight elastic - just enough so it doesnt hang lifelessly at the bottom
Amazing design ttaylor508! Fab colours--

Bat - you make a good point. I think the "she rides" doesn't enhance the design. Since I ride alone, I'd prefer not to be so easily identified as a female.

Yep - I would agree with the "She Rides:... I didn't really think about it when I was first admiring the colors and the big graphic of the gears. I always ride with my DH and that sort of stuff doesn't cross my mind, although all of us should always remember that there are crazies out there that we don't want to focus on the fact that it's a woman on a bike. Great Point!

In short-listing designs, I probably would not choose a design that had similarities with an existing jersey design.
Sorry, this is design competition and hence, focus must be truly original in composition, colour in relation to fit /general shape of the jersey itself. It would help that that design did make a cyclist visible to some extent from a few blocks away at least.
Meaning..I wouldn't wear a black jersey..

I really like the concept of that jersey--where we've been and where we're going. Very nice. Very original.
But, I'm not convinced of the implementation. I'm not artistic, but I wonder if you did yesterday on the front and today on the back (or vice versa) instead of trying to squeeze them both on the same side? And/Or maybe change the style more than just black/white--do yesterday ala' Retro Image and do today in a modern style? Hey, I said I had no concept of art...
Oh, and, mayanorange--I keep logging in looking for Version 2. I can't imagine you'll top version 1, but I keep looking...
