View Full Version : TE Jersey Design Contest
There is one design I really like (not mine :p) but there are parts of it I don't like.
I would like to see elements of some designs incorporated with others.

Thorn - That would be a good idea too, splitting the yesterday/today idea into two different images and potentially two styles.
I'm working on the back panel... it's not drawing out like I thought that it might. We'll see how it goes.
I wish that I was able to work it out in illustrator, making changes and adjustments would be easier in that program instead of photoshop.
mayanorange: +1 I like the stylized bike! Very cool.

Thorn- It'll probably be tomorrow by the time I get to it. Should be faster since it's a modification sort of, but I still take forever trying to get these things right.
I'm still not 100% happy with Version 1, but it gets the general idea across. I was hoping for long and winding road starting in green rolling hills or similar, then ending up at a city at sunset, but I couldn't get it look quite right in photoshop. Though now I really like the bike design, so I'm going to focus on that for the next iteration.
I'm totally open to suggestions if anyone has any!

This is for those that wanted something brighter and more like a traditional jersey. It could come in about any color you can think of, but i chose this color for visibility. Of course the back pocket could also be the same color as the jersey, but I was thinking of trying to slim out love-handles by using the black.
The swirls by the wheels are to imply motion & soften up the design.
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn187/RLphotoND/Jersey4Yellow.gif
And this is a little more girly. Uploaded larger so you could read the text on the petals. If you have ideas of what to put on the petals instead let me know!

Now back to using PhotoShop for what it was intended for in my day-to-day routine, work. :D This has been fun!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THE DAISY JERSEY!! WOOT WOOT!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THE DAISY JERSEY!! WOOT WOOT!!
At first I didn't realize about the "she loves hills, she loves them not..." then I howled out loud:D. That's funny. Just to be a crybaby, how-about some Sugoi vs LG... LG doesn't fit girls with bewbage so well IME:rolleyes: (my humble 2cents, or $, for brand picks).
EDIT: and if you worked in part of it with yellow, some peeps would buy it just for the high viz part... tip, mute the white daisy pedals with something other than pure white... I'm always paranoid about having a sweat wet t-shirt contest while riding. HEY! Maybe the daisy could be a "Black Eyed Susan"??? Those pedals are yellow with a black center in the flower. Wild and free... simple, yet pretty. AND bonus prize... the "Susan" part would be after TE's own dear Susan Otcenas (just not the black eye part, ride safe). How's that for working a design? lol.

This is a general suggestion: Could you add lots of reflective bits to any jerseys you produce? That's my single biggest source of dissatisfaction with bike clothes -- like manufacturers don't think people might ride after sunset or something, or as if a little decorative reflective piping will actually grab drivers' attention.

Logo similarities.
Well, similarities, but also differences. 1) The Tour de California wheels seem to be rolling in opposite directions , and 2) Mayanorange's wheels are the TE logo, which is already TE's and not TdC's. So should be no problem.
I think version 2 especially is a great design! I generally don't go for green, but that jersey could be an exception in my case. And are my eyes or my screen fooling me, or have you envisioned/drawn it with a metallic reflective green background? Pretty cool and very high viz if so.

I'm digging Urlea's daisy design and what she did with Mimi's painting. I'd buy both of those in a heartbeat. I also like the "She rides" line a lot.
Is it possible to make more than one design? Maybe the top three?
By the way, I was just talking with D*H about this board. I told him that I really like being here because everyone is so positive and supportive, so unlike so many other online communities out there. When I read the TE forum, I leave it feeling encouraged and anxious to get back on my bike, even though I'm far from what anyone would consider athletic. You all make me feel like I can achieve my health goals, namely losing weight and getting fit enough to enjoy the second half of my life.
Thank you all.

I was going for a non-flat green, so I gave it some mottling, but it'd be cool in metallic! I'm not married to the colors, so we could play with those. The blue is from the TE logo blue, the purple (and rider) are inspired by the 'Click to Shop' girl, as I like to think of her. ;) Then green made sense to go with those 2, but it'd be cool in other color schemes too.

Hi Chanlluv :) TE got me back on a bike and back in shape. Well, TE and my sister, who got me on TE. You'll do fine too. You're in good company here. And by second half, do you mean in the "Congratulations on your first 60" sense? If so, you're not alone on the board in that age group either. F'rinstance, I'll hit 60 this summer.
Now back on topic. Those Queen Anne's Lace sketches look promising! The designer was worried that "Road Sister" would exclude trail and track sisters amongst us. How about "disguising" that in code by making the "sister" a butterfly instead. There are a whole bunch of butterfly species named [____] Sister (such as California Sister, or the Arizona Sister pictured below). One of them could be perched on a stem somewhere.

Woohoo!! More submissions. It's a good thing I'm self-employed or my boss might get annoyed by how often I check for updates. :) (Don't tell anyone, but I think she does a little bit anyway.)
Great new additions! It is going to be so difficult to choose!
Lime Clean design with good logo placement.
Jillm- I really like the bird jerseys & color choices.
As to the suggestions for my "She loves hills" Jersey, thank you! I reallyappreciate the input.
I pulled old image files of photographs I had taken of black-eyed susan's & sunflowers last night to see if I could design something similar with the bright yellows in there and conceptually it just didn't work for me. The text lost it's prominence amongst all the color and it looked cluttered.
As it is right now, the background green could always get brighter. Same for the blue version. I just tried to pick a happy medium for what most computer monitors are calibrated to color-wise.
Roxy- I feel the same way about this forum. There is definitely "community" and a lot of wonderful encouraging ladies. :D
It still makes me laugh that my husband pointed me to this site in the first place after ordering my tri-suit from it as a b-day gift. I'm so glad he did!

Limewave: I really like the Where Girl meets the Road... I'm typically jealous of men's jersies. So many of them are graphical and I like that style. I wanted to do something graphically with mine, like a poster, for instance. Yours is along the style that I've been lusting for in a jersey too.
Jillm: Your use of reflective elements is great. I bike to work sometimes in the mornings over the summer. I would totally buy something like that for those commutes. It would beat the fancy reflective vest that I've purchased. The birds are my favorite. But the tree on your last submission is really cool too, especially if the flowers are reflective.
Oh man, so many cool ideas.

You know, I like every single one of them! From flowers to swirls. And mimi's picture is beautiful on Urlea's post. You can just pick your mood of the day. I've always liked the look of the Amici ones too. I definitely think there should be more than one offered as some will like flowers and others will like just designs, and personally I'll get both, or all three (hint hint). Funny, as I typically don't like the look of jerseys, but these! Maybe TE should just contract members for designs and get rid of the other brand names! Or maybe Pearl Izumi, Hincapie, and Terry and others should take a look at what we like.
I just received my catalog from Terry and am so relieved that I really don't care for any of the designs. What's with all the Ride like a girl stuff? On a few things okay, but it's an overwhelming theme this time. I actually have a hoodie that says it, but one thing is enough. Like everyone has to be reminded that I'm a girl and ride? Also, the designs on the jerseys are just not my cup of tea, sort of like they are churning out the same jerseys in the same size print year after year in different colors, but I'm in real trouble if TE offers many of these! Retailers, take a look.
I want mimi's, she loves hills in ANY color, jillm's wildflower one, the orange one with swirls, zen's turquoise and orange, limewave's red one, the daisy one...

I just want a jersey that says on the back "please don't kill me." ;) Of course, it would be a screaming yellow and bold black letters.
Somehow I don't think that would sell, tho.:p
All the submissions have been wonderful. We have some very talented women here. I can't wait to see what the winners are, as I'm certain I'll be buying a couple.

I looked at the catalog and thought. Hmmm I need to be 20 or 85. I didn't feel a single thing in it. It felt very annoying teenager or something my 91 year old grandma would fancy the looks of.
I have a "Ride like a Girl" koozie. A co-worker and I had a discussion on whether I found it empowering or degrading. My answer "depends on my mood and the context".

Hey guys, I had a thought for those of us who might not win the contest (and those of us coveting too many designs!). Zazzle and Spreadshirt allow you to upload your designs and add them to a shirt that's printed only when someone orders one. They even have athleticwear, so you could make your own almost-jersey. I was thinking this would be a great fundraiser for those of us doing charity rides. TE logos would probably have to be removed, but the design ideas would go to good use! Just thought I'd throw it out there.

I still like "I support the local [in small letters] POLICE [in big letters]" on the back ;)

Yeah, I especially cringe at the one with some ditzy girl perched sidesaddle on a bike while blowing bubbles. Is that how 'girls' ride? What does it mean other than perhaps women only play at riding bicycles.  Seems like a 'pre-teen mall rat' type of mindset to me.

Well at least those two show the women actually riding astride the bikes!
Though not sure why that one gal's platform shoes are stuck up in the air- hard to pedal that way for sure. Maybe it's to balance and compensate for the squirrely steering she gets on her bike's rather bizarre frame geometry. ;) Look at that fork angle! She might benefit from WSD.
And one has successfully subdued the big bad wolf.
I actually like the ones you are pointing out- especially that Italian looking beatnik chick with the hep cat in her basket. Reminds me a bit of Mimi's Italian biking photos of old ladies on their ancient cruisers, doing their shopping.
Better than vogueing/draping over a bike and just blowing bubbles.... :D

Well I must confess I don't actually wear jerseys except for a couple of pretty plain screaming yellow ones that I wear often to be visible in traffic. I almost always have at least one item in screaming yellow on when I ride...like a top, a windbreaker, a vest, tank, tights or capris. I don't do any club riding or competitive riding, I just ride from home in our area for exercise, fun, and to do errands/shopping. I work from home so commuting isn't part of the equation. When I ride I just feel good in every way. :)

Lots of great designs here, but I'm still finding myself partial to the Mimi/Urlea submission. It's the one I could actually see myself wearing. There are many other that I like and/or think are "good designs", but wouldn't necessarily wear... I would change the sleeve color though (make it darker and maybe cooler).
Tied for 2nd, for me, are Urlea's Daisy design and the Eden/Crazy Canuck "around the world" collaboration (although I would seriously tone down and maybe somehow abstract the place markers).

There's a bunch on TE now - mostly the vintage bike ad jerseys, that the design runs over the pockets and they look fine. I'm sure that as the person moves, the design moves around too, but the brain is very forgiving and probably doesn't notice it much.

TE definitely has a great pool to choose from for their choice. I wonder which it will be?

the 'submissions' thread had so many jerseys i would actually buy compared to the same-as same-as offerings from the big companies which are so unoriginal-- i do hope TE can do some short-runs of several of the designs submitted...

Wowie zowie, you all made this very difficult! SO MANY amazing entries. :)
Urlea's "She Loves Hills" gets the "People's Choice" award. Congratulations, Urlea! We've chosen Mimi's watercolor painting for the TE Choice award. Congrats, Mimi! We'll be in touch with both of you to talk about getting art files, etc. I'm still working on getting fit kits from several vendors, as well, so this won't all happen overnight...
Now, for the really exciting part. We are going to do another poll, leaving out the 2 winners. We'd like to ask you all to vote again. See, there's like 4 more designs I personally love, and I'm very curious to see how the voting shakes out once the two "stand-outs" are taken out of the mix. I can't guarantee we'll make a 3rd jersey, but I'm very very tempted to. So, if y'all are game for one more round of voting, we'd be delighted to ask for your opinions again. Whaddaya think? You in?

Will you be starting a new poll for us for round 2?

OH very cool. I agree, as much as I loved the two that were picked, there were several others that were just so gorgeous. It really was a very hard decision to make!

I love the ideas of a second vote and maybe a third jersey!

I'm in. I sooooo wanted to vote for some of the other jerseys also.
Do you realize how painful it was to pick one and one only? Pure torture.

I guess I won't be voting or buying as I wanted a 'team" style jersey (a la the Terry kit):(

Welcome to my world. I see hundreds and hundreds of everything (not just jerseys!) from dozens and dozens of vendors. I somehow have to narrow it all down into what you see on the website. Very difficult.

I vote for 3/4 zip with No elastic at bottom and shaped to not look
boxy. Can't wait. All submissions are great but can't see where to
vote for my preference.

HERE HERE!!! I can't stand elastic at the bottom. If I wanted my jersey to ride up to my breasts as I pedaled I'd just skip it and wear a sports bra :o

Elastic can be removed. My husband and I do it all the time with jerseys that have elastic at the bottom.

We're just finalizing all the details on which fits we want for which design. It's a real challenge. We need to choose fits that flatter the designs. We're also really really wanting to make at least one available in plus size, but our options for that are very limited.
Regardless, there's an 8-10 week lead time, so we're realistically looking at mid-June before they're done.

That would be really wonderful, considering I'm months away from wearing a "normal" size jersey, assuming I can keep losing (thank you possegal, for the spreadsheet), and I really appreciate the community here at TE and would proudly wear the jersey.

Don't panic! :) I'm working really really hard to get one of them (Mimi's in particular) done in a plus size jersey. It's EXTREMELY important to me that we do this. One of the primary building blocks of this company has been that EVERY woman should be able to ride her bike comfortably & in style, regardless of her size. I'm always looking for more and better plus size options, so please have no fear of being left out.
