View Full Version : Do you routinely shave your legs in the winter?

I'm not a diligent leg-shaver at all, and in the winter, I have to ask: "What's the point?" I have at least one, usually two or three, layers atop my legs. Plus that extra hair is insulating, right? :D
By "routinely," I mean even if you don't anticipate anybody seeing your legs any time soon. Wearing of skirts or other leg-revealing clothing would, of course, necessitate some leg-hair deforestation.
I used to just shave from the knees down in winter since I'd wear skirts regularly but never anything shorter.
Now that I'm swimming a couple of times a week, I shave the whole leg (well, both of them). I'm blessed with very light and slow growing hair, though, so I only have to shave once a week, if that often. I know women who shave daily and I just can't imagine giving up that amount of time to shaving.

I take advantage of winter to wax instead of shave. No one but DH is going to see that pre-wax forest during January.... :) Waxing hurts, but stays smooth longer and it grows back finer (for me anyway).
During the summer, it's 2-3 times a week. My skin's too sensitive for that daily shaving nonsense.

I say yes, but usually only below the mid calf and maybe twice a week. Remember in Texas we wear shorts and Knickers much of the year.

I wax year-round here in California.

I have 'fur' on my legs and underarms, but it's blondish and DH says he thinks it's really cute, so 10 years ago he convinced me to stop shaving and now I can't even imagine going to all that trouble anymore if apparently I'm way cuter with my fur on! :D :D

If I were only a cyclist, I would probably shave less often in the winter, but I also work out in the gym and play tennis indoors so I do shave fairly diligently in the winter. Although, probably not as much as in the summer.

I shave every other day, year round. Sometimes I skip an extra day in the winter, but as others stated, I go to the gym at least 2 days a week in the winter and have various body parts exposed.

The funny thing is DH shaves his legs and we argue over who gets to shave if we are low on cream. :p
I wax year-round here in California.
I wax year-round, in Norway. :p
Especially in winter, actually. I do some training indoors, and my darkblond hair looks extra gorillalike over pale blue skin. And it makes hubby happy ;)

I've only started epilating since I took up swimming/tri. Before I went cycling sometimes smooth, sometimes hairy. But since swimming, also in winter.

DH shaves his legs more frequently than I do, especially in winter.

I only shave when I am seeing the masseur, and for a few weeks in summer.
Himself hates stubble and requests that I not shave at all.
I just wax. Sort of year round. But my hair and weak is so thin now that it's actually hard to pull it off except with hot wax, which is rarely available. So it's sort-of-waxed most of the time.

I'm in the why bother club - but I don't have a significant other and the dog doesn't mind:D
I only shave below the knee anyway because my hair is so light. If I shave once a month in the winter I'm doing good. In the summer it's weekly unless I mtb - I always shave before mtb because I always fall.:p

I keep shaving regularly throughout the winter...it helps me not feel so dumpy during the cold weather...and i do realize it's a totally psychological thing, but it works :)

Pretty regular shaver here, for massage etc it's much nicer. I can tolerate hairy legs, but I draw the line at hairy pits.

I don't shave during the winter hardly at all. I should, but it's not essential to my life. I have very dry skin and it seems to get worse the older I get.
When I worked and wore pantyhose, I shaved every day in the shower, like clockwork. It took less than 5 minutes.

I shave every day, all year. I hate fuzzy legs. Drives me crazy.
I work in an office, wear dresses, suits and I live in sunny socal. So I shave all the time.

I had to vote no, although if I had any hair on my legs I would shave every day. When I was in Jr. High, I wondered what all the girls were talking about when they shaved their legs and I would say "Why?". They looked at me like I was an idiot, but honestly, I have just a few blond hairs on my leg and twice a year gets them. I can count them on one hand. Hair under arms, though, and that gets shaved at EVERY shower. Turns out it's a family trait, but my mother told me I wouldn't have any hair on my head when I was 40 either. Yeah, she said a lot of nice things to me. She was wrong. My legs are smooth and hairless 24/7, but when the body traits were being passed out, I should have run faster to the "thin and willowy" line.

I shave my legs once a week, year 'round. I don't have a lot of hair on my arms or legs anyway, so I don't need to shave more often than that. But I do wear shorts to work every day, so I gotta keep at it all year long.

I shave my legs at least once a week during the winter. If my legs get too hairy they get all itchy and drive me nuts.
My pits, I had lasered. No more hair. Ever! Best thing I ever did. Now they're smooth and nice year round. :D bikerHen

I shave my legs all year, even if no one sees it. My legs are VERY hairy and when it's long, it drives me nuts. I can't stand how it feels in the sheets of my bed or against my pants legs after about 3 or 4 days.
Oddest sensation ever? Standing on a mountain top, in shorts, and feeling the wind rustling the hair on my legs. (I was in the mountains for a month with no razor) To this day, I can imagine how it felt and it freaks me out a little each time. :p

I went to college at a very hairy time and place. I took to it naturally.
Now I live in a conservative state and shave or wax enough to be (mostly) socially acceptable. (I'm 'other' enough where I live and work that I don't need to call attention to it.)
Every now and then it works out that we're on a tandem ride and DH's legs are shaven smooth and mine are hairy as can be.

I also had to vote never. At least for leg shaving. Blessed with a few scattered hairs on my legs that you can't see, courtesy of my father with the hairless legs.
I think I shaved once, in Grade 8.

I am blessed with fine blond hair so I get away with shaving a few times a week from the top of the knee down. I shave year round too.

LOL! Me too. :D I still remember sitting out on the porch with one of my friends in law school, showing her my legs, freshly shaved for the first time in 10 years.
Now, I can't go more than 4-5 days tops without shaving. I was proud of my leg hair when I had it, but stubble is just irritating.

I admit rarely that I do kind of like the "blowin' in the wind" feeling. Hair is afterall, a sensory organ.

I shave my legs every day. Feeling the stubble on my legs rub together while I am in bed keeps me awake!

I got a bad ingrown hair a couple years ago and decided not to shave near there, and then couldn't decide where to make the line, so I just didn't shave. It took most of a summer to get used to the wind through the hair when I ride, but now it's just normal for me, and I rather like being a mammal again.
And most important: no more ingrown hair making a painful saddle area!

I'm not very hairy. Haven't shaved my legs since fall I think. Maybe Christmas? I dunno. Pits, not since summer. But I have like 5 hairs in each pit. :) Summer - I do shave weekly.

No shaving for me in the winter. I only bother when I have to show my legs in the spring and summer.
I do have a hard time getting past the prickly, stubby feeling until it finally gets long enough to lay down, ugg!

Stubble is nasty. I found when I stopped shaving altogether the hairs grow back with wispy soft ends so that they are not nasty and stiff like shaved stubble. Unshaved body hair feels softer! :)

I shave daily, year round. I hate stubble.
Me, too. I hate even just putting lotion on my legs if there's stubble.
After umpteen years working as a lifeguard and shaving daily, I just can't stand hair on my legs. I shave about once a week, year round. Now that I'm post menopausal, seems the hair grows much slower these days.

If I weren't on the bike and at the gym, I would stop shaving my armpits. No, it doesn't smell worse, and long smooth armpit hair feels so much better (glidey and comfy) than naked sweaty pit skin sticking to pit skin. DH never minded hairy armpits, but I prefer to fit in I guess. Legs, about once a week. Menopause does lessen the hairy-ness! DH started shaving his legs last fall when I pointed out that his heavy coating of sunscreen on his hairy legs looked kind of gross (well, it did to me). and I think he likes it better too. Tokie

First of all, you ladies who wax are WAY tougher than I am. I'm a pain weenie, I guess, because even the thought of waxing makes me shudder.
Second of all, wow, I'm impressed with all you daily shavers! Here I thought it'd all be "Nah, I don't bother most of the winter," and actually most of you not only bother but bother quite often! Go figure...

I had to vote no, but that's because I wax year round (full leg and bikini). I usually get it done once a month and I have to admit that my hair grows back super fine now especially in the bikini area. It's very strange, but the backs of my legs are way harrier than the fronts of my legs, so I really can't go without doing something. I detest shaving, so waxing it is until I can afford laser!

Oakleaf, your post made me laugh.
I went to college in the hairy period, too, but since I lived in FL and AZ during those years, I never stopped shaving. It would have been socially unacceptable to those "Midwest Girls" at ASU. You know, the ones who thought Tempe was the big city...

Ahhh, but the momentary pain of waxing is nothing to the ongoing skin irritation I suffer from with shaving. Plus it gets easier the more you do it (the hair does not grow back in as fully and you also get more used to it).

I'm one of the fortunate ones with hardly any hair on my legs - unshaved they look smoother than most peoples after shaving, so I'm on an average of about twice a year. Do keep on top of my armpits regularly tho.

I'm with the "can't stand the stuble" club. Daily shaving girl year round here.
I have never waxed my legs before. But did the bikini and armpits.
The bikini just grew back so weird. I'm so fair, it always took a while before I could be seen in public at the pool with bikini wax rip red marks. Cross training in the pool now, I just groom shave at home for the swim suit.
Now the armpits are another matter. I HATE shaving my armpits:mad:. I do it with the rest. But, I have never healing razors cuts that just hurt with the sweat. I'm in a tank top everyday at the gym. Thus, I don't go without it.
The waxing of the armpits was the best! I agree with BSG. The hair comes back finer and softer. I could go only once a month for an arm pit wax. My good waxer left the salon though *sigh*.
I was just arm pit pet-able (is that even a word?). Sorta like a kitty:D.

As I age, my leg hair is hardly growing back anymore. Not that I had much when I was younger.
I only need to shave every 3-4 months. Same for the 'pits too.
However this is not true for some of my sisters.
I thank the gift of my mother's genes.

I find that it hurts less and goes faster if I wax after a nice warm shower.
