View Full Version : Garbage - anyone know anything about it?

I'm training for the 65 mile LIVESTRONG ride in October and I'm experimenting with energy type things as I do my long rides to make sure I know what works for me and what doesn't BEFORE the ride (common sense but validated by the numerous threads here that I've found incredibly helpful).

My cycling partner's husband (who is also a cyclist) recommended an energy/recovery drink called "Garbage" to me. I tried it on a 30 mile ride today but didn't finish it all...tasted pretty good but made me a bit nervous because I'm not sure exactly what it is and what it does. The owner of a local nutrition store recommended it to him (free samples!) because it helps with recovery as well as energy and he now swears by it. Of course, he's male and I'm not and I was just wondering if anyone else had ever tried it before or knows much about it.

Also, on the topic of recovery and energy - thanks to those of you who recommended Sport Beans!! I absolutely LOVE them, especially after learning the hard way that things like Clif bars and Luna bars are too hard to chew and digest when I'm hot and tired during a ride. I went to a local sporting goods store and found Sport Beans for .89 (as opposed to $1.29 at my LBS) as well as ShotBloks, which I also like. Gels are definitely the way to go for me! I've got some packets of Gu but haven't tried them yet.

Any thoughts?

I know nothing of garbage. But wanted to add that I bought a real variety pack of nutrition items for my livestrong team (philly on aug 24) and at first they thought I was nuts, but after the ride they were all raving about my preparedness. :) The beans get rousing thumbs up from all, as did these - http://www.powerbar.com/Products/GelBlasts/ in the cola flavor. They have caffeine in them, I think that was the best part. But they were easy to eat and tasty, so everyone liked them.

Good luck on your ride!

Personally, I probably wouldn't drink it. It doesn't have much by way of potassium and salt. Taurine and I don't get along well and it's got a bunch of B12 that makes me jittery. I guess it depends on what you are trying to get back into your system as far as recovery. That's where alot of experimenting, education and sometimes lab tests come in if you are serious about it. Otherwise, look for something that gives you some carbs to work with.

Posse, for your input. BTW, I also wanted to tell you I watched your video - very inspiring! I'm riding in honor of one of my students, a 15 yr. old sophomore who was diagnosed with leukemia this past June. I hope I can be as inspiring as you and your team...

Thanks again!

thank you for the kind words. i'm working on a new video with this year's photos and videos, i'll be updating when i'm done. :) my sister came to the ride this year. she's not doing well, but she was there and she was so proud of us all! it is a really nice event and very emotional since nearly everyone has someone they are riding in honor of or in memory of. good luck to you and to your student! i will keep you both in my thoughts. come back after the ride and tell us how it went!

From the ingredient list/nutrition info I'd agree. It doesn't sound like a particularly good on bike drink - its got little in the way of calories and is mostly fat and fiber and that's hard to digest when you are on the bike. Some people do prefer a little fat/protein in their drink, but still the bulk of it is carbohydrate for quick energy.
