View Full Version : Do women really care?

I just bought a straight razor for shaving because I'm tired of throwing $2 away every time I need to change the blades in my razor.
I did a bit of research because I have very little experience with these things, other than getting a shave from a gentleman in Dubai (who was an artist).
Now here's the weird thing. I encounter occasional remarks about how women think men using a straight razor is sexy.
This has to be one of the most banal things I've ever read. I've had girlfriends (in both senses of the word) who were fascinated by watching me shave. That seemed weird to me, but whatever's right. But my choice of shaving implements?

from me you would get some respect knowing that you have the skill to use a sharp blade on your face without cutting parts (well, large parts anyway) off.
but you also get respect from me because you know how to true a wheel.
I don't think either activity is sexy. My older son uses a straight edge and his advice is: keep the blade really sharp.
Any thing is better done well.
I think today our society tends to neglect the skills that our hands are built for. I love learning new skills. I don't think that's sexy either.
Enjoy. I hope you got a strop too.

I think having the skill to wield a straight razor is very sexy.
And so is having the skill to true a wheel.
I'm banal, I'm sure, but I'm also... um.... biased in a different direction. ;)

Having just watched Sweeney Todd last night, I'm feeling rather....conflicted on the issue!
If hubby decided to start using a straight razor, I'd probably think he's lost his mind!

There's just something really sexy about watching a man use tools competently. Don't ask me to explain.

Using a straight razor is a very cool skill and it garners respect definitely. But when I tried to decide if it was sexy, mmmmmmm.... I don't think it would do it for me. So I thought maybe it's because I'm not thinking of it the right way so I tried to envision my DH using a straight razor and I decided that he's way sexier in an apron in my kitchen.:D

No man is more sexy than when he's doing the dishes! :)
+1 on a man with tools, too! My husband spent today building boxes to build into the kneewall over my clawfoot bathtub. :::pant pant:::

Personally I prefer a man who can DUST!!
I really don't care too much about razors and stuff, except for the one i use on my legs.
Now, watching a guy use a drill or a hammer or a chop saw, that's impressive. I don't know if I would call it sexy, but I'm always impressed by a guy who knows what he's doing.

Hmmm....I find it sexy. Something about the straight blade on the skin, the skills, and knowing the soft skin left behind. It's very masculine watching a man shave with a straight blade. Although, maybe I'm thinking that way because dh has been sporting a full beard for about 6 months now.

Good advice. I hate dull blades anyway. I will usually sharpen a kitchen knife before I'll use it.
I spent the money (and decided to wait the additional three weeks) to have my razor professionally honed before it was sent to me. That way, I know what "right" feels like before it ever touches my face.
A bunch of you made an interesting point about using a tool skillfully. A disposable razor rates right up there with a toothbrush.
SGT and I went out to see Sweeny Todd about the time this idea seriously started to develop. Gave me the willies for a bit.

You have summed it up succintly.
No need to explain...

SGT is the same way. A wise man just learns to enjoy the leering.

Yeah, there is something sexy about straight razors.
As a side note, my Dad used, um, in those days it probably would have been a 'safety razor,' the double-sided blade holder thingy. My uncles used prissy electric razors. So obviously, my Dad was more of a man than my uncles to my pre-adolescent eyes.
So it starts early. . .

Ah, I don't think there's anything sexy about tools, razors, or any other "household" implement. They are just things you have to use and I am not very good at using most of them.
My husband has every tool known to mankind. He does almost all of the maintenance work on the house, so it's good for him to have the tools that do the job right. But, he gets excited over tools the way I would get excited over new clothes or bike stuff. To each his own!

For me it's not the shaving, it's the various states of undress my husband is usually in whilst performing said shaving.....
a towel is an amazing thing.....

Confidence is what it sexy in a man. Doesn't matter what tool he has in his hand. He could be shaving with a pink gillette, but if he's confident, wellllllll...............
getting warm in here :o

Good hygiene is sexy. ;)
Watching a man use a razor - any kind - ooohhoohoohoo! *shudder* All I can think is, "he's gonna cut himself!" and "those razor cuts, ooooohhoohoo do they ever sting!!"
Some women may think it's sexy watching a man shave with a straight razor, but I just can't watch.

My dh was quite sexy yesterday. While I was out on my century ride he was home building my raised garden beds and hauling wood chips. What a guy!
I think everyone has different things that they feel are sexy so the answer is yes and no. I think a straight razor is sexy but the thought of dh using it makes me cringe. I'd have to make sure I had lots of band-aids handy.

Honestly the straight razor thing doesn't really do it for me. I figure this is an extension of your knife fetish, which I appreciate because the kitchen knives are always super sharp.(I can slice tomatoes super thin with the chefs knife - yippee!) Just please do not slice yourself. I've seen the damage you can do with a safety razor.:rolleyes::p
I'm with the others about the man being in the kitchen and cooking me dinner thing AND cleaning up afterwards being sexy. Yeah baby! Handyman guys are sexy too, even though I'm quite capable of picking up a tool and figuring out how to fix things myself. Well, maybe not the mechanical and electrical stuff. I'm a bit lost there. I have to say there is something about you when you're sporting eau du bike grease though.

Don't care how it gets shaved just as long as it does - hate that stubble!

I think conservation is sexy. Throwing away used razor blades s*cks.
I don't think it's possible to shave my pits with a straight razor :(

Actually don't like looking when the straight razor is being used on someone. It's just me.
He uses an electric shaver..and still ends up cutting himself occasionally ..he has had a short beard for many years...and he can't always see every corner of his face to do the job perfectly. He refuses to use a handheld manual razor even with a safety edge, on himself...really I think he is afraid of cutting himself even more often.
I just like the end result -- a neatly shaved guy's face/trimmed beard. Trim, clean and even. No gruff shadowy ragged look. I don't find that look sexy...and when I see it on sweetie..I don't get turned on.
Obviously this thread is going somewhere else.:o;)
