GOOD MORNING!!!!
Well, I am off to the pool this morning, but I wanted to get the thread started. I am pleased to not have any residual pain after running the whole 30 mins yesterday. I feel pretty confident that I will be ok for the 5k on Saturday. My first ever by the way. I have run in adventure races, and triathlons, but never just signed up for a road race. It is kind of exciting!
Have a good day everybody.

Rest day for me today - I did my scheduled run yesterday and it was the first time in a long while I've run this particular route on my own.
It sucked the entire way - there was not one step that I didn't think "maybe it's time to walk", "I hate running", or "surely it shouldn't be this hard". I tried to slow down, felt like a shuffle, persevered and eventually finished. I came home feeling utterly demoralized and miserable.
It wasn't until I updated my running log later that I realized that I had run the entire thing at just a fraction less than my usual race pace and so MUCH faster than my usual easy (with partner) runs. Which explains why it hurt so much.
So, while I was happy with the time, I now also realize I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how to pace myself!

RnR - You're waaaaaaayyyyyy too chipper for a Monday morning.

Well Yoda,
There are several reasons for that:
1.No school today, spring break
2. Spent the entire post run Easter day lounging about yesterday while DH watched HOURS of March Madness, so I am happy to be moving today.
3. I have had a sinus headache for 3 days and I woke up this morning and it was gone...
so yep, I was uncharacteristically chipper this am....probably mostly due to number one!
Very windy in Big D today. So I went to the gym and got on the treadmill. I had enough of wind this past weekend.
I always run faster on the treadmill.
I pumped out 6 miles in 60 minutes.

I walk ran 15 min on the treadmill yesterday and 5 min today. I decreased today just because I didn't have time, but at least I got in a little cadence training.:o I ached for about 30 min after both runs.

Howdy..good morning...
Did a good run this morning. We have decided lately to concentrate on a more thorough warm-up, so I did my usual 5 min walk and then another 5 mins of skips and hops and silly whatnot and then stretched.
Today I decided to do a 5/1 run to walk on a one mile trail loop. I brought three miles in in 28 mins with the walk breaks. It felt good to move a little faster. I swear it hurts me less.
I was worried because I did 90 mins on my road bike yesterday. Easy, but still longish for me.
I also wore my cho-pat strap on my knee for the first time. I think it helped. They had discouraged me at PT from wearing it, fearing dependency, but I think it helped.
So I think I am as ready as a recently injured runner can be for my first 5k on Saturday!!!!!!
Yoda, sounds like you are getting better. Sorry you are aching. I get tired of the aching part.

Good job! Congratulations on getting back to it.
Yea, when I stop running on my long runs... it's like the pain just settles into my body and it hurts. Once I hit my time/distance... I start to walk casually... and I can barely walk anymore. It's like my body goes into shut down mode once it's allowed to stop moving forward.
This is why I know at my IM, I CANNOT stop moving forward. If I stop and rest... I might not get moving again.

K, I agree, it is less painful to just keep moving. I just started reading UltraMarathon Man...and last night Dean just finished his frst 100 mile race, the Western States....he talks about coming into the transitions, and sitting down and hanging out...and then having a terrible, terrible time getting started again.
He also described what they eat on the run...blech, belch, barf....pizza, while running...amazing folks...you long, long distance people....

Yea, I feel the same way when it comes to riding. There comes a point where my thighs/quads start to burn and when I stop riding it just hurts even more. It hurts less to pedal at that point.
I'm not sure how they eat pizza AND run. No way. Not me!

Got in my 10k yesterday on the trail.. and at decent pace and level pace (about 9:30 to 9:50/mile average). Felt fast and not in a good way, but it didn't truly HURT I guess! Just a little bouncier or rougher than usual... (does that even make sense?!). Anyway -- my tri has the 10k at the end, so I've done it a couple times now so I know I can struggle through.

I'm pretty sure if there's pizza involved, I could find a way! I'm truly warped when it comes to pizza. Anywhere, anytime, baby!

I ran hills on tuesday and it was one of those "can I make it up this hill without feeling like I'm going to fall over?" days. I'm always happy when I'm done though :D
Yesterday it was raining as I drove home from work. DH said it wasn't raining at home but I could tell the rain was moving north. By the time I got on my running clothes, it was raining. I headed out for a 2.5 mile run and by the time I was 1/4 mile into it, it was snowing big huge WET snowflakes! I finished though I had to keep slowing to clear my eyes. I had THE ice cream headache from heck, my muscles hurt from the cold, and I was glad to get home and change. I'm glad I did it...I figured it was a test of mental fortitude.
Speakin' of, Friday is my long day. There is a 90% chance of rain that day. Do I run in the rain? Do I run 13 miles on a treadmill? Neither sounds pleasant...I think I will toss a coin :)
And pizza...mmmmm. I'll do most anything for pizza :D I'm one of those freaks who could eat it at any time of the day or at any part during a workout.

I finally did a full 5km yesterday. MY shins were sore from the MT the day before but I went anyway. I am up to 5 min run and 1 min walk now. Wish I could just skip the rest of the walk/run phase and go to straight running....
Ran 5 miles in 51 minutes on the treadmill tonight.
Bottom of my feet hurt. Very odd pain.
I got it done though.

Hi Guys. I ran my first 5k ever today. Yep, technically it does not count as a first because I have run off the bike so many times in tri's, BUT i have never just gone to the starting line with the "runners". It was so much fun. All of my newbies runners from the group that I started where there running. They all did great!!! It was windy and cold, but very sunny.
I am pleased with my time 26:11, and I am hoping that I will not pay too big of a price later with my knee. I am attaching a picture of my friend Jackie and I . She is in my group and has trained really hard. I am really proud of her.
I have to shrink the picture down, I will post it as soon asI get it done.

Nice to see a pic of a fellow TE'er!
I did 5km this morning. It was cool out but sunny.
Later did 40km on my road bike. Oh I can't wait until it gets warmer out!

RnR girl -- congrats. That's a great time for your 5K! I wish!
I haven't posted about my runs this week because they haven't been a lot of fun. We got our dear new Boston Terrier puppy last Saturday (see avatar), and I've been so busy and exhausted taking care of her. I managed a short trail run on Tuesday and a short treadmill run yesterday (both about 3 to 3.5 miles), but that's it. Fortunately, that should be enough to maintain fitness, but it's kind of sad to see that the past three weeks I've run a lot less than the month or so before that. Oh well....progress comes in fits and starts at times. The weather is just too nasty to run outside this weekend, so I will have to set my sights on another treadmill run at the gym (it's at my workplace) on Monday. Then my biking buddy and I are hoping to go on a mountain bike ride Tuesday after work when it warms up again!

Emily!! Paisley is home!! It's OK to not run, she'll won't be this cute little ball of puppy love for and you don't want miss those moments. Well, maybe the sleep deprivation and cleaning up accidents part, it would be nice to miss those.

Treadmill runs are hard. Great job on getting it done!
What a cute puppy! I love puppies. They smell so nice. Yes, that's an odd comment, but puppies, like babies, just have this wonderful smell... and I have a very sensitive nose so smells matter a lot to me. :)
*Running Confession*
I had a 1:40 run scheduled on Saturday. I skipped it. Didn't run a lick. It was overcast but not raining. I was just a lazy slug. My coach is going to be b*tching up a storm on Monday.
On the upside, I went to the grocery store, spent time with my boyfriend and took a 2.5 hour nap on the couch. Heavenly!

Great job RnR! Such fun running with your newbies!
Must be contagious, that was my exact time in January :)
Accountability post, now. I've been concentrating more on riding, one thing and another haven't been running much (mostly reasons, but a few excuses for sure!). I'll get out this afternoon/evening, after DH leaves for his out-of-town seminar and the tide drops a bit.

Thanks for all your sweet comments, ladies! Paisley is indeed a love and smells really good. Even our neighbor who visited this week commented on "puppy smell". Even her poop doesn't stink yet, I swear it! :D
I still feel like a slug....but not getting enough sleep night after night, I'm just not very motivated to exercise. I'll be back, though. I've had lulls before for various reasons, and I always come back to fitness, stronger than before.
Once we are back to nice weather (we're having a January-like day today with high in the upper 30s and rain/drizzle -- ugh!), I'm sure my motivation will come back with a vengeance!

I spent the week in the Smokey Mts of TN with some girlfriends riding our endurance horses. We rode 33 miles on Monday, and I ran (on foot next to my horse) about 10 of it, mostly downhill. Man, my downhill muscles hurt! I chose to not ride on Tues - my horse needed a rest day - so I ran the roads but only four miles, and mostly uphill. Rode 18 on Thurs, with about 6 on foot (I have a gps) and rode 10 with about 4 on foot on Friday. Soooo, I had a good week - nothing hurts too badly!! I am back in NY now and back to the gym tomorrow. I may try to road bike there, though.
I am getting ready for a trail run (22K) on May 1, and then the Western States trail run training over Memorial Day (34, 20 and 20 miles). I think I am nuts.
Despite all the running and riding, I am still 10 pounds up from last summer. What's with THAT????
Run, girls, run.

It's a good thing I posted here earlier or I don't think I'd have been able to drag myself out :p
No particular objective today other than to just get my feet back running. Junk miles, if you will
Just over 5 miles in a stiff wind. NWS data calls it 17 steady gusting to 33, but I swear it's always windier directly on the beach than at the airport two miles inland. My downwind return leg was fun, though :D
Most bizarre thing I've seen on the beach in a long time: tracks from someone's spike-heeled, pointy-toed pumps. Out and back, two-thirds of a mile each way (I had to know!). The heel holes were at least an inch deep. I wish I'd seen the person walking in them!
Also four strapping young Beach Patrol guys helping dig out a large-ish motor home that was stuck in the sand. What were they thinking?
Cloudy and a light mist, not too many people out. It started to rain just as I finished my walking cool-down. Perfect timing :)

I managed a total of 2 miles running today before my leg started to act up. I stopped promptly and walked home. It recovered quickly.

Emily, cuuuuuuute puppy. When I'm having a bad day/moment, I go to the Daily Puppy (http://dailypuppy.com/) (Snap told us about this a looong time ago, some of you might remember...). There is a puppy named Prefontaine on page 2 right now.
Oakleaf, I'm always amazed that women can walk in those shoes on pavement. I can't imagine walking on sand in those things. I bet her calves were pretty angry with her at the end of that!
Mr. Yellow is away on business so I skied Friday after work, ran Sat, and ran today. My azz is toast. Then I had a beat-me-up massage this evening. I think it'll take me longer to recover from that than from the 28 miles I ran this weekend. Nothin' like an elbow in the hip and in the iliopsoas. Yeow.

Good Morning Everyone...
Yoda, the knee was pretty good. A tiny, tiny bit sore on the lateral aspect where the "rub"/chondromalacia (sp...sorry it is 5 am) is located.
Now that was before we did a mt bike ride yesterday. OH MY GOD MY LEGS ARE SORE!!!!
I rode with my SIL, we made the boys go out in front and leave us alone. I rode at my own pace, which was good. There were not any huge climbs, just lots of up and down. I felt great until about 3/4 of the way thru and then my quads went, OK, we are done! I wore one of those neoprene sleeves on my knee while I rode and I think it helped.
DH said it happened to him too, so I did not feel so bad!
Right now my knee feels ok, but I am back to school today, I think I will be teaching from my chair!
OY.....
Yellow, glad you got out...ahhh..the pain, feels great right?

I went to a training seminar with my bike guru. Lactate test, swim video, etc, etc, and finally a running session.
He suggested we do a sort of shuffle - do not lift your feet and don't bounce. All energy into a forward motion.
It felt weird, was difficult to absorb but it makes sense. Also, neither do my calves work so hard pushing off, nor do I strike as hard with my heel stressing the t.anterior.
Whaddaya think, runing Gurus?

When I went to the running clinic in November, they suggested a very short stride, fast turnover, low to the ground. Sounds like the same idea.
Hey Alpinerabbit... that sounds... interesting. I can't say that my running coach taught me to shuffle... but if it works, then do it! I see a lot of people with shuffle type of run who are flying by me!
Well, on Sunday I rode 70 miles... aka: 4.5 hours... and then I ran afterwards.
It was a very short brick scheduled though... only 8-20 minutes of running.
I ran 1.5 miles, with a 9:40 minute mile pace. I was shocked! When I got off the bike my thighs were burning so badly. But somhow I pumped out a fast run. Of course, that was my threshold.

I've been Mostly Away but on friday (last friday) I did 13 miles on the treadmill. I have to say, that was a lesson in something. I'm not sure what but OH was it boring! I'd make up little games in my mind like "let's see if I can do another mile before <insert something here such as another person walking by or another new person to the gym orientation talk>". Gads. Finally I had to keep telling myself that I need to be strong mentally and this would do it.
I did a track workout on the treadmill on Sunday. While I am/was darned tired of the treadmill, I am equally tired of the wet and snow and cold.
Let's hope for good weather this week :D

I feel like such a slug...I didn't do anything but play with and take care of Paisley all the cold and rainy weekend; then today, I planned a run in the gym, but things got crazy at work and I didn't make it to the gym. Hoping for a mountain bike ride with a friend after work tomorrow, but it may rain yet again. We need the rain, but <whine.....> :(
I'm running on Wed. no matter WHAT!
