Okay so I just came back from the bike shop after discovering surface rust on my spokes. I had tried to sand it off but it reappeared. It originally started after I left my bike on tha patio on the trainer. I thought maybe just the rain or something. Well, The pool chemicals are right next to the trainer. DUH! So the chlorine corroded the spokes causing the rust. This was obviously pointed out by the shop owner who had "NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE". Hated hearing that. Needless to say I had to order and will get my wheels respoked. Feeling stupid.

Hmmm, wow. I never would have thought of that either. Of course, I've really tried to forget all of that nasty chemistry stuff I was forced to take in college. :p I'll keep that in mind just in case. Sorry that happened to you but thanks for sharing it with the rest of us so we all can learn from it.

At least you have a good excuse to buy new bikey stuff.:D

Wow! Yeah, I wouldn't have thought of it, either, but remember what those spa chemicals used to do to everything that was int he cupboard. Blech! X is right - new bike stuff is good!

Hugs and butterflies,

Can't you make bracelets out of the best of the old spokes?

I don't see this as being a common problem as most people don't have a spa, hot tub, or pool.
I do have a room for my bikes, though.

This is quiet pertinent to me, actually. I am housesitting right now (longish term), and the hot tub is in the living room, where my bike is also in the trainer!

(Have to say...love the hot tub in the living room...) :p

In my former house, I had a hot tub on the back patio and stored my chemicals in a waterproof cabinet under the roof overhang. I never tried putting my bikes near it cuz I had a huge garage but I did store my metal snow shovel next to it. Never saw a problem so that box was apparently worth it's high price for many reasons. :D I'll keep that in mind for the future when we finally buy a place out here in OR where we live now and put in a new hot tub again. (my old creaky joints can't wait.)

Here's a great blonde moment I had yesterday:

DH and I had a seminar all day in Sacramento - about an hour and a half away. We left in a rush to get back because our daughter was home alone, and by the time we got back I REALLY had to go to the bathroom. I rushed into the bathroom, shutting the door behind me without bothering to turn the light on. I noticed this strange flashing light coming from..???

I finished my "business", and then peered around in the bathroom to see where the flashing light was coming from.

Was it the smoke detector? No. A light from out on the street? No.

Finally, I called my daughter in to try to figure out what the heck this was...

...it was my Bluetooth headset. On my head.

Slight hijack - me too! It is supposed to be the, uh, guest room - but instead we have two bikes, bench, free weights, mats, exercise balls, TV & DVD player, fan.....oh yeah, and a sleep sofa "just in case". ;)

You have no idea how reassuring I find this story. I KNOW I would have done this if you hadn't served as an example first. Thank you for your service. :D:D

It's not quite up there with my elderly mom (who had a stigmatism), who was stymied by that big, bright, football shaped light in the sky (the moon :p).

Zen - I like the decorative touch of the doggie on the exercise mat. Seems there's always photos of pets in Better Homes & Gardens, casually laying about.

Wait a minute...

If that's what pool chemicals do to your spokes...

I hear ya Grog, and I tend to agree, but I also remember what good healthy ocean air did to my BRAND NEW polished aluminum hubs even though I washed my bike IMMEDIATELY after the ride

Very nasty things to your lungs - I speak from experience. Chlorine gas can kill you. :( I was just "burned". They mean it when they say to store in a ventilated place, and open only in fresh air...
