There's a street in my town named after him--Major Taylor Blvd. (actually a fairly recent development--it used to be Worcester Center Blvd. and I think the name change happened within the past year or two).

I just finished reading his autobiography. I found it in a used book store; there is a new one out, though. Just reading about how he was referred to in the newspaper, even here in MA, where he was generally accepted was sickening.

Great article, Zen! Thanks for posting it.

I want to read his autobiography, too.....Note to self: must check out Strand Books & see what they have....

I heard Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (http://www.amazon.com/Colored-People-Henry-Louis-Gates/dp/067973919X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203097351&sr=1-1) talking about him on the radio and just had to look it up.

nice! I'd read about him before but never got to see a photo.

Imagine trying to ride your bike in a race at the same time that people are tying to run you out of town!!

One of the Indy stations just ran a brief "Black History Month" piece on him highlighting his achievements and the velodrone named after him.
