As part of my "give up one car it needs $2K worth of cosmetic bodywork to pass inspection anyhow" plan, biking to the train station and local businesses is looming large. We have some nylon panniers, but my heels hit them. I can't find the wire ones at Nashbar, Performance, REI, Trophy Bikes (W. Philly) or TE. Anyone know of an on-line retailer, or can someone give a manufacturer and model number?

(Lights? Check! Fenders? Know where to get them. Rain gear? check! Wool socks? Check check check check! It's just carrying stuff that's a bugger.)

Happy New Year and thank you!

I know my LBS carries wire panniers, so I think they can be obtained from the major supply catalogs, but I wonder whether you would have heel strike problems with those too - and I would think it would be a bigger problem!

Could you try a different rack of pannier? Some give you more lateral adjustment than other.... You could also try a smaller pannier and use both.

holds a lot of stuff and would have less heel clearance issue

I have seen them on Amazon - here are a couple...

http://www.amazon.com/Wald-Rear-Basket-Silver-101676/dp/B000AB6DCS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1199313482&sr=8-5

http://www.amazon.com/Wald-Folding-Basket-12-75-Black/dp/B000ABGJX6/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1199317162&sr=8-9

Is that what you are looking for? If you have nylon grocery bag type panniers, the heel issue will be the same with these too.

Actually I had heel strike issues with the grocery panniers but not with the Wald baskets. The panniers I had were fussier about where they mounted on the rack, whereas the folding baskets can be mounted wherever you want them, pretty much. So they were easier to position out of the way of my heels.

Thank you all so much! :)

The foldable ones are my favorite, so that the bike will fit on the rack at the train station too. Half my shopping is done downtown.
