Hey, the poor girl has a cold and is feeling sick this evening. She should sleep tonight and worry about the new bike tomorrow instead of battling traffic in the cold at night with a sick head.... :o
Plenty of time for drooling tomorrow. :p

OK. Since it's pitch black out I had to bring the filthy commuter bike inside.. hopefully mama beane is not reading this; she'd be disappointed in my dirty ways.. ANYWAY.. below is a pic of the world's greatest commuter bike, my coda sport. note that this bike has many upgrades/changes from stock specs. it's an '05 that I got a good deal on this spring. let me say that I love this bike even though compared to my road bike it is heavy and slow!

whoooooaaa! I love that bike Beane.
yeah...more photos please!! The Coda was the 1st steel road bike I tried on this latest caper and it really stuck with me...what a nice ride...it was why I just HAD to go back and check that aurora again!
I feel a LITTLE better with my bike here...and here's a crummy photo...I'll take a good one in the daylight.
How the heck does that seatpost not snap off!!!!!
(See my brown Brooks!!? I need recommendations for a brown bar tape to match the saddle/copper of the paint...maybe leather...? Rich brown, cream and black...yum)
My Aurora is the Morgan....my Globe is an apaloosa...:D
Oh, Elk, she's gorgeous!
Hugs & butterflies,

Love the copper color. Your bike looks terrific, and since you love the fit, congratulations! You finally found it!
Good luck finding that bar tape. You can get an exact match with the Brooks tape, but it's pretty pricey. I wound up with brown tape from Soma (http://store.somafab.com/thzebarta.html), but its a light brown. If anyone else knows of a dark brown tape (not cloth), I'd like to know also!

Gorgeous! Congratulations!
You can get exact match leather tape from Brooks, or you can get cork and use a brown shellac over it to make it match. (I've seen some nice effects with shellac, and I'm pretty sure thats how LisaSH does her bars.)
Nice bike!

Purty bikes, MDs has a similar colour scheme to my Giant... veeeery nice.
Bene's coda sport... black and red is always stylish, a sweet looking bicycle.
However, Elk's Aurora does appeal to me most - and this is surprising because brown is not my fave colour... but this bike is such a delightful combo of shades I think of full-cream chocolate, and who's not to love chocolate???
I'm probably biased at a glance at these pics because I prefer drops on a bike anyway...
Lurve bike porn... keep it coming (were we going to ask for a "Bike Porn" forum?)

Where's that pink Venture? No one else has an AUrora? what?
I am laid up in bed with a wicked bad cold and all I can do is IMAGINE rding my new bike...:( Had to call in sick --don't even have the energy to level my Brooks by the nose....)
I guess I'll just have to wait for more photos and perhaps do a little online shopping......
I saw some gorgeous mahogany golf club grip tape...but how much of that stuff do you need for handlebars?
I LOVE rich brown colors....the shellac only goes to amber though...hmmmm what color would I shellac over to get brown....

NO! I'm not and I'm damn ...well...I'm just gonna have to ride it out. But I sure do appreaciate your thinking of me!
Lying in bed....reading. Getting in trouble shopping...I went ahead and bought the Brooks tape (47.00!!!), looking at wool, saddle bags....
The hardest part is that we've had this unusually sunny and glorious autumn and I think it's ending...and I haven't gotten on my new bike once since it came home...

The hardest part is that we've had this unusually sunny and glorious autumn and I think it's ending...and I haven't gotten on my new bike once since it came home...
Just want to say I completely commiserate. At this time of year in Portland, it's hard to miss even one beautiful day, cuz we all know what's coming.
Three of my able-bodied friends have all, within the last month, told me that they've hung their bikes up for the winter. I'm like "Have you looked out the window????"
What is this crazy talk about hanging their bikes up for the winter, anyway???
Uh, woops... :o I'm kinda going off topic here, I see. I just miss my bike.
Hope you can get out soon... even if just for a little slow coasting! Your Aurora is sure a looker.
p.s. You're going to have change that "renouncing weeniedom" line... there's been nothing remotely weenie-like from you in this bike hunting escapade. You were a focused, driven woman on a mission!
jeez blueskies, i hope i can ride all through the winter??!!!! We're in a La Nina year and either it'll be a very wet winter or a very dry winter.....so we'll see.
thanks for the links! checkin out each and every one....you all cheer me up!!:D
now about that bag...see how little space there is between the back of my saddle and the rack? I'm not sure I could do a banana style...I was thinking like a carradice barley bag would set right on the rack nicely...that riv bag is too small.
Last time we rode we stopped and got snacks and for the first time in my entire life I didn't have a bag big enough to hold a drink and snack...(I have the carradice roll on my Globe)...DH had to carry mine in his banana bag....our friends of course have a pannier each.
i'm gettin right sick of lyin' here...that's a good sign!!
BleeckerSt_Girl
11-09-2007, 11:33 AM
Oh, Elk, I see, you want a bag to hold lunch and sweaters and stuff...banana bag too small for that.
Yes the Barley bag is GREAT- I don't have one but I have seen one and examined it in my hands- very NICE. I love the military green too. It's not small but it's also not beastly huge- a perfect size for lots of everyday stuff and errands. The side pockets are very handy for things like cell phones and cigarettes. (just kidding!) :p
About the riding through winter thing-
DH and I were real happy last weekend there was a gorgeous sunny breezy day that started around 30 degreesF and warmed up to 45 mid afternoon.
We went to breakfast on our bikes before our 30 mile ride, and people kept saying ARE YOU NUTS??? Even cyclists we have riddne with were saying ARE YOU CRAZY?!? We just laughed at them all and had a wonderful sunny crisp refreshing ride, all snug in our multiple thin merino wool layers and feeling toasty and fabulous. Merino wool on our heads, necks, hands, tops, arms, legs, feet....snuggly soft wool that was SO comfy and breathable. :p Good for riding a few hours out in as low as to 25F or so for us. (And that's wimpy by some other people's standards!) So long as the roads are clear, we are out there riding most of the winter. Freezing rain we definitely stop us though- for that day.
Once you buy some real wool you better get rid of your anti-weeniedom saying, or you'll be kicked out of the Wool Weenies thread! :D  ;)

Lisa, not to continue drifting this thread; you are riding hills when it is very cold. Don't you get all sweaty? (I do!) and I always wear wool base layers when it's below 50 out.

I don't sweat very much when it's below 40. I also find if I wear mostly all wool it breathes a lot so after grinding up a long steep hill and getting overheated, I then zoom down the other side and am nice and cool again! :D
In general I find I do best when I wear extra wool layers on my legs, feet, hands, and neck, but I'll wear one layer less than what I am tempted to wear on my torso and arms- those places overheat more quickly. My hands, feet, neck, and legs get colder more quickly, so I really layer those parts up more. If those parts are nice and warm, then I stay warmer all over and can afford to wear more breathable stuff on my torso and arms. That works well for me.

tanks, coyote! So what did you end up with instead?
Did I mention that I also found a KOna Sutra? toooooolooong a reach for me; like the 520.
Wool. I'm wearing my Rivendell merino crew under a flannel shirt right now...I'm findin it easier on the skin than I did. But...drifting with Mimi...what and how do you layer that wool? Is it right next to your skin? What do you wear for wind and wet over it? If you wear a waterproof shell, does the wool still breathe?
How to dress, is the question, for riding in this wet above 32 climate of the NW?? give me some specific stuff to shop for...:D
oh and by the way...I am renouncING weeniedom...I have not renouncED. t's a long process...:D

Elk, did you go for a ride on your new bike?
I snuck a wee spin yesterday and it flattened me...I had to go back to bed!!
(After learning I need a longer seatpost...:D )
I will LOVE it though, I can tell...it felt so SOLID and how do I say this?....quiet. Like it knew exactly what it was doing...Quiet as in all the parts integrate perfectly....good build I guess, hung on steel...solid.
I'm HOPING I can get out to the handmade bike show for a LITTLE while...and maybe down the LBS to have them swap seatposts...
If you look at my seatpost (see below pic#2) and the one in the picture that Lisa sent of the loaded JA tourer (Pic #1)you can see she has hers way higher...and mine is already at the go-no-further-line.

You look comfortable- do you feel comfortable?
Two things-
Do you feel like your weight is nicely centered and not falling forward?
And do you have any aches or like numb hands or sore neck, etc?
Do you feel like you can get power behind your legs when pedaling?
Your riding posture looks very much like mine when I have my hands on my hoods too.
If all is well....then just enjoy!
Nice duds!!! :p :p :p
Elk, you look terrific on your new Jamis.:) I think your will have many super rides on your bike. I'd like a bike like yours-just a few sizes larger. I too enjoyed wearing my Ibex knickers today.
I have on my Lena skirt now over my leggings and my norgie crew on top and over that my new 9$ ebay red merino sweater and I feel SO AT HOME in these clothes!!!
I plan to follow yr advice, Lisa, and after setting the aurora up close to what is "correct" just ride for a few weeks. I am playing around with moving my weight from bar to saddle to pedals to distribute it evenly and I can feel just where I need to strengthen my muscles...
A year ago Thanksgiving...I quit smoking, and then I gained a bunch of weight....and got no excercise...
Today I am totally smoke free, have lost 15 lbs, and not only do I not have to FORCE myself to "go outside and play" I LOVE it!!!

Yay from here as well! Elk- you have turned your life around!
Yeah, just ride for a few weeks to let your muscles start adapting. If you are not in pain don't worry about tweaking your bike for a while. The longer you ride the more obvious it will become as to what changes you might need to make. People tend to tweak their new bikes back and forth so frequently at first that they totally forget how the bike was set up to begin with, or which tweaks resulted in what differences for them.
Isn't it wonderful to have found a healthy exercise that seems like FUN rather than work? That's how I feel about it! :D :D :D
I lost 15 pounds too over the past 2 years of walking and biking....after a lifetime of non-exercise/non-sports.
You selected some really great wool pieces to get set up with. You'll get a LOT of mileage from those items you chose. :p
Wearing my snuggly wool tights and skyline zip top right now...... :p
thanks friends...it's fun to justify spending all this money on bikes and wool and leather....i just remind myself it used to be cigarette money...and probably would've ended up as health cost money!
I used to be all heady and broody and smokey...embraced psychic suffering for the sake of "depth"...and now I'm all clean and squeaky and just wanna ride my bike with my dog!!
Here's me and Maudie on the Other bike...which I still love. I'm singing Maudie's song to her...you can see she's listening...
