We have neighbors with girls named Maaya (like Maya) and Mia (Mee-yah). Their poor dad has a hard time keeping their names straight. Then again, Dh has the same problem sometimes with our children's names even though their names are quite different.

LOL...I am the youngest, and the only girl. But, I got called John, Dan, and Mike many, many times in my poor parents' attempts to call me by my name!

Later in his life, my Dad took to calling me the name of his own sister, despite zero dementia on his part.

Now, my oldest brother constantly calls me the names of his two girls!

Boy I thought I was going out on a limb when I named our daughter Elisabeth Kathryn. We thought she'd have Beth as nick name but it is "bug".

My first Girl choice was a Dutch name of Krina (kreena) but if misprounced she could be called Krina Vagina.....

My uncles are twins and my grand mother was on something. She rhymed both first and middle names Merrill Glenn and Carroll Lynn.
Merrill had 2 sons 11 months apart and named them Kendall and Randall.
Carroll had a daughter and named her Carol Lynn. She goes by Lynn.

Here are some more family names I have neices named Raylene and Shalene (not sisters). A neice named Jamie (after Jamie Lee Curtis) and my son is James (named for my dad). A sister named Barbara Ann (like the beach boys song).
A neice named Jessica and a nephew named JESY (James Edward Shane with a y).

Huh.
Try the name "Regina".
Pronounced "Ra-geena" - very unlike "vagina" and very unlike the pronunciation of the capital city of the Canadian province Saskatchewan (which does rhyme with vagina)!

This seemed like a good thread to add this to.
I was in southwest missouri today, visiting my niece who was in a terrible car accident last Sunday--she is able to walk today, thank God--and we passed gas station after gas station called "Kum and Go". I am not kidding.

Some questions we decided we don't want to know the answer to--where was a marketing consultant? What names did they REJECT??

My mom knew someone who had a OBGYN with the name...wait for it...wait for it...Dr. Beavers. Wow.

I've seen first names like Princess and Sparkle before. Can you imagine going to school with the name Sparkle??

I have a boring 1 syllable name from the 1950's when the name was more popular. I was born in 1959.

When you say hi to me, it sounds like hygiene. When you say hi to my partner, it sounds like hijack.

No kiddin'.

I do have a lovely middle name...in Chinese...which embarrassed me as a kid. It was so ethnic-sounding to me. Until I learned of its the English translation: "orchid". My first name in Chinese means, "precious" or "highly treasured". I am the eldest in my family so not surprising I was given this name. It bears no relationship to my English first name.

Orchid is a common flower traditional Chinese name for girls. Like rose or lily is for English/UK cultures.

I most strongly advise parents explain to their child about the meaning of their name, particularily if it is non-English language based. A child needs to be proud of their name.

and the next sister after myself, her lst Chinese name translates as Twilight or Dusk. so with her middle name translation is Twilight Orchid.

Another sister gave birth to her lst child, a daughter 2 months ago. My sister dithered over whether or not she wanted to give the child (that is half-Chinese) a Chinese middle name.

She consulted my father..who does have a more poetic soul than my mother..
So the girl is Ella, middle name is Mei (as pronounced "May). "Mei" means beautiful in Chinese.

By the way, the colloquial name for the U.S. by the older generation of Chinese immigrants is Mei Gok..or beautiful country. It must have the Gold Rush dreams...or something.

I used to work for an OB/GYN. The most memorable name I can remember is......................Placenta. Yup. The mother was an immigrant from Mexico...spoke very broken English. When the doc was trying to explain a placental abruption, she missed the part about possibly hemorrhaging, and locked onto the beautiful name Placenta. We tried very very hard over the next couple of months, to discourage her from naming the baby Placenta, to no avail. Poor kid...She was an absolutely gorgeous baby with an absolutely hideous name.

Yep, that's ours.

Scout - my wife liked the name from To Kill a Mockingbird
Hardin - my grandfathers name
Levi - her grandfathers name
Howard - self explanatory

I was googling for his birth announcement and this site came up, so I registered to reply. If you don't like it, well thats just tough and I'll gladly PM you about it.

(Of course his brother's names are Slade Jaxen and Zane Michael)

Don't be offended. It's an unusual name. (Well, Scout is now almost cliche', it's so common, but all the ones I know are girls, like in To Kill A Mockingbird). Might as well get used to total strangers raising an eyebrow.

That's really cool to get the explanation! The title of the thread is "what's in a name" and now we know. Surely you knew that the names of your kids were not mainstream and would get a little attention. And don't know if you read the entire thread, but your names are downright boring compared to some. Personally I like the names that you have chosen, although I'll agree with T'ville that Scout (as well as Zane) i would think of as girl's names.

Are you offended by our thread? We had wondered what type of reaction a parent would have earlier in the thread. Surely the parents with some of the most unusual names expect some comment?

No, Not offended by the thread. As an ER physician I see some interesting and unusual names as well. I sometimes wonder what parents were thinking when they name their children.

My wife and I realize that our children's names our unusual, but they are for the most part family names (Zane is my father's and Jaxen is her fathers middle name, Michael Is mine and only Scout and Slade are unique, but literary references were given for those). I may have worded it wrong, but my attempt was to prevent people from jumping in on my post and starting a flame war. As a member of other forums for several years, I try to keep additional comments to PM's versus tying up the boards with useless back and forth attacks.

Interesting that Zane and Scout would be considered names for girls, as Scout is english derived and neutral whereas Zane is a derivative of John and is considered masculine. However, I have also seen several girls named Michael.

We had thought about throwing in a few odd spellings and a few hyphens and apostrophes here and there in there names, but my wife thought that would be too much. :)

Mickey, understood that your intentions were sincere and not inflammatory.

But, you've confirmed a fear that many of us had...our enjoyment at the risk of offending someone - even if we didn't intend to. I think that it underscores an important principle that this group stands for...and violates by perpetuating this thread.

Even if you aren't offended, others may have been. You are clearly articulate, educated, and know what you think. Others may not be so understanding and would easily take offense.

So, please accept my apology for even running the risk of being offensive. I disengaged from this thread some time ago...and I should have stayed disengaged. I enjoy hearing that young "Scout" is associated with a literary character that stands against injustice.

Here's an irony, if you practice at the hospital in Madisonville, I guarantee you that we know people in common...even though we're nearly an hour away.

Best wishes and congratulations on the new addition to the family.
