I have a 'generic' list of the things we always need/use. This way, I can set DH to the task of marking off what we already have on hand, so that he's 'helping'.

It's in an excel format so I've made a .gif out of it:

(sorry it's so difficult to read!)

I do the same thing, but I've switched stores since I set it up and haven't updated the layout. I don't buy everythiing every time I go shopping, I use it as a checklist too. I also plan dinners on the weekend and add my proteins and special ingredients to it based on what I'm having.

Dairy: butter, cottage cheese, cream cheese, eggs, LF cheddar/jack, lunch meat (not dairy, but the store I used to shop at had sliced lunch meat in with the cheeses), Milk, sliced cheese, string cheese, yogurt, chocolate milk

Proteins usually include cooked chicken, ground turkey, fish, shellfish, turkey breast, lean steak

Fruit: Apples, bananas, berries, grapefruit, lemons/limes, oranges, seasonal (mmmm cherries), "exotic fruit of the week" (I try to pick something I havent seen before, like mini pineapple from S. Africa, star fruit)

Vegetables: baby carrots, bell peppers, spinach, cucumber, green onions, leaf lettuce, mixed greens, mushrooms, radishes

Breads: Raisin, whole grain bread, english muffins, pita

Dry goods: Crackers, granola, dry cereal, granola bars, oatmeal, pretzels/chips, raisins, pasta

Canned Goods: beans, fruit, soup, tuna, pasta sauce

Frozen: juice, "easy food" for my DH's lunches, skinny cow sandwiches or sorbet

Baking goods: baking soda/powder, cooking spray, flour, sugar

    Supplements: EFAs, calcium, multis

Condiments: hummus, ketchup, soy sauce, salad dressig, mayo, mustard, pb, pickles, salsa

Beverages: Beer, coffee, mineral water - plain, mineral water w/ juice, NA beer, tea, wine

Etc: toiletries, dog foods, cleaning supplies, special requests & treats

    lol.. what a thread...

I have areas and flesh them out depending on what's on sale or interests me:

    Weekly:
    -beans, legumes and/or lentils
    -rice and/or grains
-oatmeal - usually irish/steel mill style
    -soy dogs
    -fresh fruit in season
    -fresh veges in season
    -potatoes
    -bananas
-meat - tends towards poultry, but i love buffalo burgers
-bread (whole grain, nine grain, the heavier the better!)
    -nut butter (usually peanut)
    -goat's milk
-something sweet and bad for me
    -cheese
-something processed and great for ride food, cookies, or such

    Periodically:
    -olive oil
-coconut oil (used for cooking, wonderful enhancing flavor for any meat!)
    -condiments, salad dressing, marinades, etc
-healthfood store versions of macaroni and cheese
    -eggs
    -flour (whole wheat, spelt)/cornmeal
-sugar (fructose, or something equally "health concious")
-honey - love raw when i can get it. so do the ants
-rice milk (great for when I need something and there's no goats milk)
    -pasta
    -alacer electromix
    -canned soups, trader joe's stew
    -frozen veges
    -clif bars or equivalents
    -yeast
    -salt and spices

    oh man...

    My shopping list is sad..

    2% Milk
    All Bran cereal
    Bread
Cream cheese (sometimes I buy light)
Apples - other fruit that is cheap
    Hot chocolate
    Spinach and sometimes baby carrots
    a HUGE tin of Coffee

Yikes... Maybe I should take a lesson from your shopping lists
