New Music!

Anyone out there teaching cycling? If so, do you have any recommendations for some good music?

I have all the Schwinn Cycling CD's and really like the techno/trance type music to cycle to.

I also have the Cycle Toolbox etc, but I am getting burnt out on my music!!!!

The spin class I do on Tuesday nights (when I can get there) is like going back to the Friday night discos at the YMCA in the - I was about 13 and all the songs that **I wouldn't buy now but will sing along loudly to** are what her spin class are made of...

Its like a retro trip every time ... funny thing is though that I am much fitter now than I ever was way-back-when ;p

Check out Pedal-On, I second Brandy on that one. Also look at some new tunes from Zero 7 (mellower techno, good for warmup, cool down, long winding spins) -- something different to try....I found them on iTunes. I also like Cafe del Mar (also on iTunes). They have compilation CDs, I've found some good ones on there CDs.

I have a whole list of artists I could send you, let me know -- sometimes there's artists you just don't come across.

I can only take just so much techno. Or disco for that matter. Beat or no beat, in the long run I find it boring. Luckily, my spin instructor is a musical omnivore. Something different every time, even classics if the rhythm is what she needs for that class. I suggest you go browse at CDbaby.com. You can download sample tracks for free, and they pay 2c per track to the artist so you don't even have to feel guilty about it. Then if the samples grab you, you can buy the whole cd. I've gone out an bought one after hearing it in spin class -- Paul Simon, Rhythm of the Saints. It has some really motivating beats, and also lyrics and melodies that keep your mind entertained so it's not listening to your muscles complaining.

"Starry-eyed Surprise"...You might have heard it in the diet coke commercial where they're skating on the beach

"Southern Sun" is good for climbs.

Also try some of Madonna's more recent albums. They're all techno.

I put in Stan Rogers and a couple others on my CD and hit "shuffle" - if it's fast, I sprint. If it's slow... I shift up...

What about some good rock - ACDC... Melissa Etheridge... George Thorogood... the rock albums of Springsteen... Black Crowes...

Or even something a bit off beat - Old Crow Medicine Show might work?

I've been using a lot of skater type music lately. Jimmy Eat World, Offspring, the Killers. Some other stuff my 17 year old listens to. I'll have to find out the artists. The skater stuff is usually pretty fast and upbeat. Just be careful of the swearing.

Also, don't be afraid to mix genre's. I like to use Blues (Jonny Lang, BB King) for climbing, as well as Metal (think Godsmack, Metallica, Drowning Pool), as well as covers of other songs. One of my favorites right now is "Saturday night's alright for Fighting (covered by Kid Rock and Nickleback). Then I've added in classical stuff as well (the 1812 Overture is excellent!).

As another poster mentioned, using all techno can wear on those that aren't fans, so although I love to use it, I do so sparingly.

Flight of the Valkyraes?

Snow Patrol's new CD, Nirvana, Blind Melon and Smashing Pumpkins are pretty good for slowish, clear-your-head rides... I like Oakenfold and Skychurch (?) DJ Shadow and other heavy-beated technos for climbs (Wump, wump, wump wuh-wuh-wump, wump...)

Also- totally digging the Killers' "When You Were Young"

Have to put on the angry music when I spin. Currently it's The Bangkok Five's "No One's Gonna Take Us Alive" CD. NIN and old Clash tunes do it, too.

There are too many to list. But one of my latest favorite is new from "Pink" the title of the song is "Who Knew" awesome song check it out. You can download it from ITunes. BTW- I'm a BIG fan of techno/dance tunes.
