    Thyroid? Well Darn.

    To disable ads, please log-in.

About a year ago, I was diagnosed with multi-nodular goiter via ultrasound. I was told it was fine, but to come back in 6 months. Well, I didn't. Starting last January, I became so stressed by school and work, I just decided to focus on that. I stopped posting here, and when my six month follow-up notice came in February, I kind of forgot about it. Now, just went to my yearly physical ( same Gyn that noticed the nodule and referred me). My hemoglobin is down, so low iron, and it could be caused by an enlarged thyroid, or maybe because I have my period? The second sounds unlikely. They took blood, after the initial hemoglobin stick test, and I've called for an appointment with the thyroid doctor. They'll call me back in a few days.

I'm not especially tired. And yes, I do often have a sore throat, and am a little hoarse. That has been going on for years though. ???

Well, I'm terrified. I asked about my throat many times with different doctors, and they always brushed me off. Until last year. Not sure why I wasn't worried about the follow-up, except I'd had so many different tests that caused stress and turned out to be benign that I didn't want to go through the stress. Again. Yeah. Too late to worry about that, now. And, as mentioned, I'm kind of freaking out here.

Anyone been through this? I hate this.

So far (and I say "so far" because the odds seem to indicate that I'll have a thyroid problem eventually), my only thyroid experience was back in 2004. I was in the middle of buying a condo at the time. I went for a physical and the doctor thought she felt a nodule on my thyroid. I completely freaked out, assuming the worst. (Immediately afterwards I met with my realtor, who had to calm me down, which is why I remember that I was buying my condo at the time. We met at the realtor's house, which was beautifully decorated.) A week or so later I went for an ultrasound and it turned out to be nothing.

So I can't give you much advice, but I totally sympathize re: the stress of going through the tests. I'm sure there are folks here who can give you more concrete advice.

I hope it all goes well. p.s. You've been missed!

Thanks, and glad I've been missed! just got off the phone with my sis-in-law. She had breast cancer a few years back, and can empathize with the total freak-out I'm experiencing. Jeeze. She used the words 'panic attack'

Glad you're back! And sorry you're dealing with a health scare; I don't have anything to offer in that arena other than my doc has wigged a couple of times on mine, ordered a bunch of tests and everything came back fine, hope yours is the same.

It's amazing how I felt okay until that appointment. Thanks, Pax.

Almost 10 years ago, one of the many specialists I saw for my litany of fibro symptoms, found nodules on my thyroid (he was an ENT, so he knew the drill). Referred me to a wonderful endocrinologist, who did an ultra sound and then I had one every 6 months to a year for a few years. Nothing changed, so she did nothing. She also told me that 50% of people over 50 have nodules here. She said eventually she would do a biopsy, but I haven't seen her in 2 years, even though she was treating me for my osteoporosis, too. Anyway, I guess I should bring it up at my next physical, but I am kind of hesitant. The treatment for thyroid cancer involves shooting you with iodine, which I am deathly allergic to. It's almost 100% curable, but I'd rather not stop breathing for it!

I remember you saying that last year. The sore throat worries me. Waiting for them to call me to schedule the appointment is a pain, but it's my own fault.

Do you have any problems with allergies, sinuses or asthma? Lots of things can cause sore throats. I'm getting them lately as a result of switching to a different asthma medication.

I have a sore throat if I sleep with window open, which sucks.
All allergy related and not the same as the burning sore throat you get when sick.
Try, try, try to not expect the worst and know that you can be treated for this.

Yes. The problem is, I've had a chronic sore throat for years. And allergies. And asthma. So everyone disregards me when I bring it up. Now the thyroid nodules plus anemia is causing my gyn. concern. But yes. Hopefully is's a combination of small things. Stress certainly makes it hurt more!

Not sure of the difference between a burning sore throat, and an aching sore throat. But I am hoarse. Yes. I need to avoid thing about it, and go to my appointments. Sigh. Hate this. Thanks, all.

I missed your presence here. Sending you warm regards and good wishes, kiddo.

I'm sure being stressed by work and school does not help. I hope you're able to find time to do something calming, a bike ride or a long walk or a good movie or whatever.

I have nothing to add except that I am thinking of you, Sheila, and I hope that it is "nothing" (or just the usual allergies, etc. etc.) Please keep us posted.

Waiting IS difficult, do let us know how things turn out. My thyroid was removed when I was 25 so I know what you're going through.
