I have a 2011 Surly Cross Check which has Alex rims, and Shimano Deore hubs. DT Swiss stainless spokes with silver brass nipples. I'd like to get a better wheel set, so went to a local wheel builder (she's a woman) to ask for ideas. I want a "retro-essque" yet very reliable, easy/low maintenance wheel. I also don't want to spend more money on a hub than I paid for the entire bike, just a good upgrade from what I have. We only spoke briefly, but she suggested:
Rims: - H Plus Son TB14 (polished silver)
-Pacenti SL23
Hubs: -Suzue Classica Road
-White Industries T11 (this rear hub is twice the cost of the Suzue rear hub
I've done research on these items, but I don't know anything about wheel build, mechanics of a hub, etc. I will certainly go back to her for an "official" consultation to discuss further, but I'd love any input you have. I like the H Plus Son TB14 rim a lot, but don't know about the relevance of hubs to the overall wheel to know if it's worth paying twice as much for a rear hub.
Thanks for all your advice and wisdom.
