    Where are Bikes Made?

    To disable ads, please log-in.

In my search for a bike, I've questioned where they are made -for many reasons (labor issues, environmental, social, etc). Can others add to this list?

Here's a partial list of where bikes are made, with the caveat that this is the info I could gather for CURRENT bicycles (many of the locations have changed especially in this decade), but the accuracy can only be confirmed thru the honesty of the companies. You will find many of them have deceptive or elliptical explanations on their websites.

    Gunnar/Waterford.

Georgena Terry Custom (built by Waterford)

Bike Fridays are made in Eugene, Oregon. Lunas were made in New Mexico and Colorado but are no longer made at all.

Arkel panniers and stuff is made in Quebec. Cocotte is a Canadian maker of courier bags (Montreal). There are several Canadian bike builders, but I don't know the names. Other bag makers in the US are Rickshaw and quite a few other small shops in SF and other places. I'm not sure that Timbuktu bags are still made in the US, but they might be.

Ortlieb is a German company, but I don't know where their items are actually made.

The last I knew, Waterford still makes Rivendell's custom bikes but not their stock sizes. I believe they also make custom bikes for a couple of other smaller companies, but don't know which ones.

Waterford has not made Custom Rivs for quite some time.

    From Rivendell's website:
    http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-custom.htm

Currently, our customs are made by Mark Nobilette. He has his own private business, but squeezes in a few frames for us as well. In a perfect situation he'd build only for us, but life and business doesn't work that-a-way, and so we get what we can.

They do have a stock frame made by Waterford, called the Roadeo. Also some Sam Hillbornes are made by Waterford.

Other than the highest-end Treks, the rest are built in China. According to the owner of one of our LBSs whose primary line is Giant, Giants and Treks are made in the same factory.

Almost all Cannondales are made in Taiwan. I believe some of their very highest-end bikes are still USA made. But I don't know that for sure.

I'm not sure that Cdale makes any bikes in the US, anymore. My 2010 alloy Synapse was made in the US, but my 2011 carbon SuperSix was not. And AFAIK none of the aluminum ones were made in the US after '10.
