I need a basic html editor

Hi all, I am putting my new desktop together and I need a software rec.
I've been using Dreamweaver MX ( somewhat current) but it's total overkill for my needs. All I ever do it update the text in my website, or build really simple pages for my site. Back in the day, there were some really simple shareware editors out there ( anyone remember Hotdog?) and that's all I need. Any suggestions?

I don't know if you're on a Mac or a PC, but years ago I had looked at Freeway for Mac. I never did end up buying it, but had a lot of buyer's remorse after dumping $$ into Dreamweaver MX, myself. It never was very intuitive to me and I'd always wished I'd instead purchased GoLive, since I was already so familiar with Photoshop's interface.

When I first took an HTML class many moon's ago, we used Notepad on Windows platform as an HTML editor. Since I'm not a PC person I don't know if they still include it in current system software. I have used Mac's Simple Text (don't think its around anymore), but currently I use GoLive which works really well as an HTML text editor.

(PC) one feature i am looking for is the option to switch from "code" to "design" as I work.

Maybe check out Kompozer. I'm pretty sure it's free, and should be available for Windows, Mac, or Linux. It has both WYSIWYG and code tabs that you can switch between. http://kompozer.net/

I use a simple text editor with syntax highlighting, TextPad (textpad.com).

If you already have DreamWeaver and even if its an overkill, why not use it? It's pretty good for going between code and design. I use it and I like it. Have two windows opened at the same time. code in one window, "design" in the other.

Don't know of too many others that will do this and still not be an overkill. I did search in Sourceforge.net, where its a repository of all sorts of freeware. Not sure what you want to try from their list.

Are you not wanting to use older DreamWeaver because its not supporting CSS?

I think it's ridiculous to install a 600 MB program for a few simple tasks.

Oh... didn't realize the footprint for DreamWeaver was that big.

just looked up coffeecup. Looks pretty light weight. And the latest release was in Jan of this year. Can't get much more up to date than that.
