    Does the campus have a bike cooperative? I know some universities do. My DD uses the one at Portland State and she has learned quite a bit about taking care of her own bike. They helped her replace her brake cables - she didn't have a ton of miles either but the crude from the roads in Portland had trashed her cable.

    We don't, simply because Ohio's not exactly a bike-friendly state (hilarious, considering it's the home of two of the most famous LBS owners in history).

    Took the bike to the shop and just had a full-on tuneup done because she needed it. I liked the LBS owner, and while it doesn't cater to roadies and they have a very limited selection (they make most of their money off powder-coating, by the looks of it), it seems like a nice, friendly shop.

    It seems like the issue was that the cable had been rather chewed up and was starting to fray, but not to the point that I could see it.
    At least I don't leave slime trails.
