Have you considered a flat pedal with pins and "sticky" shoes? If you pressure your foot properly they stay put nicely.

Maybe it's just being here in Canada, but it's harder to finder choice of mountain bike or commuter cycling shoes, that aren't too bulky, etc. Over the past 2 years, it just seems to me what is offered from the manufacturers seems to be less choice. I don't care much for the cycling shoes that look like running shoe in shape because it looks less easier to stick my shoe in a toe clip. (I actually have Zefal toe cups.)
I don't ride just on flat pedals since I don't like the sensation of my foot /shoe slipping off the pedal. Nor do I get much leverage at all.
