So, this happened a couple of weeks ago, but finally a few more details of the story have come out.
Around 6:30AM and well over halfway through a relay race covering 130+ miles, a cyclist and the (17 year-old) runner she was escorting were hit, the cyclist (mom of 4) was killed. The driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel and alcohol may have been involved (below the legal limit according to the link). The driver crossed the center line and drove all the way onto the opposite lane's shoulder - the runner/cyclist would have been going north, the driver also been going north, so they were hit from behind. The runner is okay and no serious permanent physical damage.

I assume the hearing about whether she should stand trial is just a formality.
Assuming the driver really did fall asleep, I guess it is pretty much a freak accident (why couldn't she have fallen asleep 30 seconds earlier or 30 seconds later!?), but still very chilling.
So sad for all parties involved I hope justice is served in this case.
I'm not so lean and mean, but I am large and in charge!
