Met my husband downtown yesterday and we went to Fremont to meet our sons at Blue C sushi. On the way there we stopped at essential bakery to pick up some bread.

(this is one of those times that a picture is worth 1000 words)

total ride; 41 miles. Two columbia loaves, 1 ciabatta.

Hmmm. I'm thinking Essential Bakery is kind of a dive.

no, not at all. But they won't sell day old bread, so there's great bread in the dumpsters!

Those bins must be exclusively for the bread? Obviously your family knows how to time the trip..for freshness for free.

there was only bread in those bins, each wrapped in its paper wrapper. There were rolls and loaves of all kinds.

This reminds me of the days when I lived with a group of people who published a magazine "Vocations for Social Change" in the 70s. We lived in a rented house not far from a "rich" suburb in the SF Bay Area. We dumpster dived about once a week and found all kinds of goodies that had been tossed because they were "not acceptable".

Seeing Mimi do her "dumpster dive" is quite the scene!

Here in the Bay Area, they usually give away day old stuff to charity. However, I haven't check our local Safeway to see if that is the case here. Maybe when Raleigh Don and Mimi come down next year we'll find out!
