    GEB bridge opening-cyclists & cars

For those living in British Columbia and to our friends south of us on the Northwest Coast in the U.S., there will be the opening of the Golden Ears Bridge in Langley, a suburb south of Vancouver. Bridge is approx. 20 kms. or less north of the Canada-U.S. border.

There will be a media and community bridge completion celebration event on Sunday, June 14/09. Pedestrian traffic only. Construction activity is madly going along to meet serious deadlines. (I used to work for them.)

So far the bridge will open for traffic in July 2009. The lst month is intended to be free to cars. Thereafter there will be a toll for cars to use it. There will be separated cycling lane in both directions on this 1 km. long road bridge.

New bridge is close the Golden Ears Regional Park...which you can google or find in Wikipedia info. Yea, I would see the mountains from afar when at work.. bears do come down from the wilderness and mountain occasionally. Whole area is near major pacific annual salmon runs.

Would suggest some time this summer to ride the bridge....I have such mixed feelings about the construction of this bridge and the highway approaches nearby since the positive part, is it will open up to other folks farther away an area that local residents have enjoyed in the past. At this time, there are some lovely rural areas. (Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, etc. side)

But most likely the area will change in 10 yrs., meaning more urbanization.
