Clif Bar & Company Announces Voluntary Nationwide Recall of CLIF® and LUNA® Branded Bars Containing Peanut Butter Due to Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- BERKELEY , Calif. , Jan 19, 2009 -- Clif Bar & Company today announced a voluntary recall of CLIF(R) and LUNA(R) branded bars that contain peanut butter because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products contain peanut butter manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of an investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter.

The following Clif Bar & Company products with "Best By/Sell By" dates ranging as shown below, in all sizes and packages, are included in the recall:

These products were sold in grocery, warehouse and other retail stores throughout the United States .

No other CLIF or LUNA products or flavors are included in this recall.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged to destroy them but retain the "Best By/Sell By" code found on the back of the package. Thank you, michelem! I have a box of six unopened "Crunchy Peanut Butter" Clif bars my DH got me for Christmas (plus two boxes of non-peanut flavors). Never even thought about them in relation to the salmonella outbreak - glad I haven't eaten any! Just filled out the form on the Clif site and will see what they say.

We just got the recall sheet in the shop from clif bar.
they are issuing refunds.

edit to add- if you read the expanded recall from the peanut company, they have included pet grade peanut butter/paste. So best to check your pets food/snacks as well.

I tried to buy a clif builder bar yesterday and when they scanned it at the register it came up do not sell!! Now I know why I wasn't allowed to have my snack.

My husband ate a peanut one Sunday. He is still feeling okay. I wonder if we can get credit through the LBS for the other one? I don't want to have to deal with Clif for one bar so I might just chunk it.

YES! Take the bar(s) back to the LBS. They will get a refund for it, so they shouldn't have a problem refunding you. All they have to do is fill out a form that clif sent, and they will get a check. SO any upstanding lbs should give you a refund. I think they may be forced to by law??

I haven't heard back from Clif yet (after filling out the website form). I wonder if I will? Don't think I still have the receipt for the box of 6 I have, since it was purchased before Christmas.

Thanks! It is a shop we frequent so I don't anticipate it being a problem. I have to go in tomorrow to get him tubes and gels for a race Saturday so I will just do it then.

They were purchased at Wal-mart -- not sure if they are as friendly as an LBS about returns without receipts.... still no word from Clif.

I purchased a box of 24 at Sam's a couple of weeks ago. I took the box back today (we had consumed half the bars). I did not have the receipt so Sam's issued me a gift card for the full amount.

I don't think this was on there when I inquired - sounds like I should just sit tight for a little longer:

If you purchased the recalled bars, please destroy them but retain the BEST BY, SELL BY or EXPIRY DATE/DATE D’EXPIRATION code found on the back of the package.

Costco and Sam’s Club members should return any recalled products to your local club store for a full refund.
