Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk Crew needed!

    To disable ads, please log-in.

    Hi Folks,

I've been in charge of the bicycle Route Safety crew the past two years in Atlanta, and on board for 2008. They've just added Washington DC to the list of cities, and I signed up to help get that city up to speed. But, we need more cyclists!!! We work side by side with the motorcycle crew, all in charge of keeping everyone safe, and spirits up. Part traffic cop, huge part cheerleader!

Excellent bike experience needed, ability to ride 40 miles a day, incredibly cheerful, upbeat people only need apply. No whiners allowed. It's amazingly hard work -- we're out before the first walker, and escort in the last walker each day, and camp out with the rest of the walkers and crew. I use my mountain bike so I can make sure I can follow wherever the walkers go -- Atlanta has us on dirt paths at times.

When you're not assigned to control traffic at an intersection, you're moving to your next intersection ahead of the walkers, cheering them on, keeping them safe (no headphones or cellphones while walking) and just having fun. Desire to wear a pink tutu for 3 days not necessary, but helpful.

All the information is here: www.3-day.org Sign up for DC crew, and after you're signed up, you'll get a crew assignment form that you'll select "Route Safety" and put "Bicycle Crew" in the comments.

Seriously, only positive, upbeat, take-charge types who can change their own flats need apply!

    Thanks!!!!!

    PW

Do you need volunteers to commit to all three days? I could probably do one or two...

Ahh,.... forgot to mention that -- you have to be able to commit for FOUR days -- training day is the Thursday before the walk, so it's a four-day thing. All or nothing, unfortunately.

Julie, I have no idea what the logistics of DC is gonna be, but here in Atlanta, we needed help transporting cyclists and bikes one morning. If that's the case, I might get in touch with you!

I just went to the site, can one sign up for a particular crew? Sounds like fun and a tough workout. I crewed CAR4 (California AIDS Ride 4) and crewing was harder than doing the 7 day ride.

Do you just need cyclists for DC or all the walks?

    Trek,

I'm only doing Atlanta and DC. Atlanta is full already, so I only know about DC. I would imagine you could ask the coaches at the 3-Day if they need other cities as well. I was just thinking it would be a great way for some of us to meet.

You first sign up as general crew, then in a few weeks, you'll get a crew assignment form -- that's where you'll request Route Safety, and indicate that you're a cyclist, not a motorcyclist, although we all work as one team.

(And, if you do sign up, PM me your name -- I'll send it to the crew coordinator to make sure we reserve a spot for you on the bike crew!)

this looks very interesting. i was part of the medical crew for the dc aids ride in 1999 (i think that was the year). but biking as part of the crew sounds like a great idea. i'm nursing a bum shoulder, but i have to believe it will be fine by october, right? i may need to check with a friend and see if i can talk him into this too. let me think some more on it, and i'm set to go see the ortho again so i should know more about my dang shoulder in a week or so.

I'm very interested in doing this, but I think I read that you have to camp with the walkers. Any chance I could sleep in my own bed instead? This old lady doesn't do camping!

You should see the ages of some of the women who walk!

Seriously, you have to camp. As part of the crew, if something comes up in the middle of the night, they need everyone to be right there. We're also the last ones in, and first ones out. Trust me, you'll want to get into bed as soon as you can, without wasting time traveling to and from the campsite.

Really -- I've seen all types who would never 'do' camping, and they do just fine...

The riding isn't too much -- they only walk 20 miles a day, but sometimes we need to double back or loop or whatever. More importantly is if the shoulder can handle the traffic cop moves. And the dancing! If you're working an intersection with a motorcycle, they like to play music -- it's so much more fun crossing the road a couple of hundred times when there's music!

I have to add that i am soooo not a camper, but i did this for the ride in 1999 and really it was not a big deal. though i think i needed to take a few days off of work after the ride to relax and recover. i too was up very late and night, calling 24 hr pharmacies and updating charts. then up first thing in the morning so we could move out and be at the next stop. now that i type it all, it really was a tough few days without doing any of the riding. but i had a BLAST and it was so worth doing. maybe i'll see if my b-i-l is interested too!

Here's a great peak into our 3-Day lives, but be warned -- it's on a motorcycle forum, and it gets a bit rough...

And, my ride reports are on this forum,... someplace!

    Here's from my maiden experience:

Well, the time is approaching! I'm coming to DC for the 3-Day in just a few weeks!

Quick question for the locals. I'll need to get from our closing ceremonies back to near where we'll have camped (that's where the guys I'm riding up with will be parked) Someone mentioned taking the Metro. This will be on a Sunday afternoon. Can I take my bike on the train?

    Thanks!

    Hi again!

The 3-Day is still looking for crew volunteers -- NOT for the bike or motorcycle crews. Some of the other crews have had crucial members drop out, so although it's very last minute, there's still time for you to help out a great cause!

Sign up, and let me know if you're in -- I'm excited to be coming to DC -- just wish I had time to meet some TE'ers!

I know this is so last minute, but they've increased the number of walkers, and now we need more route safety folks -- motorcycle OR bikes. I'm bringing a mountain bike, but a hybrid, cross, or even road bike will do.

Training is Thursday afternoon, and then you work Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 2-4.

If you can swing it, think about it!

Lemme know asap, and we'll fasttrack you through registration.
