I've only done half that distance, but am thinking of training for a June century, so I've started doing the research.

I am planning on doing a 90 mile ride from Austin to the Shiner Brewery. The ride is 4 weeks away. I have never really trained for anything in my life, and am realizing that it sure wouldn't hurt to do it for this event, as it would be the longest ride I've ever done.
I would love to hear from you ladies ideas for resources, preferably books, that you recommend. There is so much out there, I don't even know where to start. If someone could give me a basic outline of what I need to do to build base so that I can finish this ride comfortably without hitting the wall, I would appreciate that, too.
And now I will sit back and watch the replies flood in!
Thanks, gals!!!!

hi ALison,
I don't have book titles in mind, but I can defintiely recommend the website AIDSlifecycle.com. The website is about a 585 mile ride from San Fran to L.A. this June. I'm doing it for the first time, and am a newbie to riding. Lots of good information.
I just remembered a great book I read on mountainbiking, published by Mountain Bike Magazine. The original copy I borrowed from a library was about 10 years old. That version was well written, funny, informative. Read it ocver to cover and enjoyed it all. I then saw a more recently published edition in the bookstore (also by Mountainbike Magazine) that was totally boring and formulaic.
Good luck on you beer run! Sounds like lots of fun.

When I started training for my first century many people recommended The Complete Book of Long-Distance Cycling : Build the Strength, Skills, and Confidence to Ride as Far as You Want (on Amazon). Its a good resource, although I used basically ten pages of the book -- the training schedule, and the nutrition guidance. I modified the training schedule because they give you ten or twelve weeks (can't remember) of workouts to prepare you, and I only had 6, but if you've got something of a good mileage base you can totally use their schedule ... .just bump up a few weeks. That book is pretty popular, you might be able to thumb through a loaner copy if you know any century riders -- I think they all have one!
There's anothter book called The Female Cyclist ... the reviews were good but I found the book fairly useless -- no info the first book didn't have.
But more importantly ... you've inspired me with the beer run idea! I think I could ride to several brewerys within a hundred mile radius or so ... something to think about, and what a reward when the ride was done!!!
Have a great time!
Thanks for all the replies, so far! I have been wanting to get "The Female Cyclist" but haven't seen it at the big bookstore, or the LBS. I'll have to check again.
Jennifer (also my name ), the ride is an organized ride starting in three cities, all 90 miles or so from Shiner. They anticipate 3500 people total, and it all ends at a big hootenanny with a concert, free beers and food for riders, showers, massages, the works!!! I'm so psyched. DH and I will do the ride, and MIL will bring our son down and shuttle us home!!! SO fun!
I think those of us who live in California should do a winery run! I'll bet we could find winery that we could converge on from all different directions! What a neat idea

There is a winery run, of sorts in late September--it's the Sonoma "Waves to Wine MS Bike Tour:

Fixedgeargirl,
I just saw this thread, could I get more info about this ride? Who sponsors it, is it an annual thing, etc? It's been a long time since I had a Shiner Bock! But that sounds like a ride worth planning a long weekend around!
I used this site to help get me ready for my first century last month. I had a great first century, enjoyed myself, never felt worn out and averaged 16.6 mph for the ride. Hope it helps.
