I just watched a great essay on Discovery Channel about Sir Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. What amazing men, what incredible courage. Shame on me for not knowing all the other wonderful humanitarian things Edmund Hillary accomplished as well.

Condolences to New Zealand for a great loss.

I read that too. Not often you find such a combination of a certain greatness (in his later work as well as climbing) with persistent humility. It's a great loss to the world.

He was an amazing person and he lived an amazing life! If we could all have the adventures he had and still live to such a ripe old age!

Heard it on the 8 am radio news on Friday. It was 2nd item to the visit of The President George W. to The Region. I was especially touched that they mentioned his "Sherpa colleague" [transl.] Tenzing Norgay
Was so gutted I phoned Mum straight away on my mobile!
A good innings and I am pleased to read he was in good spirits till the very end. Some of the best aspex of kiw-ness - independence, determination, modesty and giving back to life what it has given you
Have spent the last hour going thru Stuff.com on Hillary's passing...getting sadder all the time
