    Blackle – The Environmentally-friendly Google

Whenever your PC screen is all white (as in a Word page for instance) the computer will consume about 74
watts. When black it uses an average of 59 watts. Using this knowledge, some months ago, Mark Ontkush
wrote an article about how much could be economized if a Google page used a black background instead of
white. Taking into account the enormous popularity of the site, according to Mark's calculations, about 750
megawatts/hour would be economized each year. Using this data Google created an all dark version of his
search engine calling it Blackle that works exactly as the original version but consumes less power.

According to a C-Net article June 2003 (which I don't have in front of me now, can link later) Google has been using solar power as much as possible since about 2002.

That's one reason they've been my primary search engine.

So whether you use Blackle or "Blueble" they may be your "green'est" choice.

Just tried it and I don't mind the value reversal at all. But does it seem to anyone else like there are more ads/fewer results per page? The layout is different in a way I'm NOT sure I like...

Will have to play with it some more...

Hey there Sandra... can you link us to any articles that talk about this?

Just I am always weary of downloading stuff into my OS

To clarify, Blackle was not written by Google. It was created by a company called Heap Media using the Google Custom Search. Info is available by following the About Blackle link on the search page.

It may use less energy, but I find it much more difficult to read. My eyes prefer dark letters against a light background. So I will stick with Google!

That's funny. I like the impatient faces she makes as she waits, but I think it might get annoying after a while.

My default has been GoodSearch. They donate their proceeds and you can choose your favorite charity from a long list. It's a Yahoo powered search, so the results are a bit different from Google's.

So now I have to choose which does more good in the world as if I weren't agonizing over enough minor decisions already.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
