Welcome to TE. Might want to surf over to the Getting to know you thread and post a quick introduction:

I've got to be honest it will be hard to find a low cost MTB because in my view the words "cheap" and "full suspension" should not be used in the same sentence. If you're doing the kind of riding that calls for suspension that will cost. Hard tail, your classic no frills, no suspension MTB can be cheap and super fun. There are some good affordable gravel bikes out there. It really depends on the kind of riding you want to do and where and how. We're really need more time and information to give you ideas.

There have many mountain bikes in the market but all are not good for mountain biking. In this article- https://freshbikescycling.com/mountain-bike/ Rebecca Friedberg reviewed the top best mountain bike . Schwinn Bonafide bike good for mountain biking and its cheaper than other bikes in the market.

I'd want to test ride and a side by side comparison with

    https://www.konaworld.com/lanai.cfm

    or

And whenever you're done, we need the ride reports.

I’m pretty sure the best MTB under $600 is going to be a used one.

That's true of almost any bike. Often the problem, particularly for new or newer riders, is bike fit. For instance next to me is a road bike I found for about $50 in a thrift store. I could see that it would fit my wife perfectly. Even without a test ride it fit like an old pair of Levi shrink to fit blue jeans. Of course now that it's been repainted, Brooks B67 saddle, Velo Orange 650 wheels etc etc it's a $2,000 bike. But it WAS $50 and really would have been fine without all the work.

Many shops sell used bikes, trade ins, last years models ... That can give you the best of both worlds. You get the savings of a used bike and service of a shop which should let you dial in the fit.

If I was a new rider looking to save that's what I look for.
