That's what the area's like..
Sorry CC, just re-reading this and registered confusion... you recommend doing the 42nd traverse if flying to the South Island... but in this post you talk about Tongariro, Ngaruahoe and Ruepehu... they are at Lake Taupo... in fact I can see Ruapehu from the top of our farm and we are in Hawkes Bay!

Methinks you have your mountains mixed up!??

LOL... Dirt Diva, I have been so close so many times... I think if i can drop my workload down a fraction, I will make time for regular off-roading - not just THINK about it

And yes, less work and more dirt.
Drink coffee and do stupid things faster with more energy.

If we end up renting the van, we'll visit north island. If we just tour, I've heard the traffic is killer and should be avoided at all cost. Should it?

Still thinking a mix would be good. Three weeks touring on the bike, then renting the van for a week to hit other spots to just enjoy mountain biking!

I think it depends upon where you are actually. I would get a fluro yellow vest or jacket to increase visibility from a distance when touring.

if you come to the Nth Is, we are in Wellington which is where you'd come in on the ferry or by plane. Makara Park is a great place to get off road.

If you want to meet up with other cyclists for a ride or a meal, do PM me & I can show you around.
