    Low Car Diet

Our local bicycle advocacy group is having the Low Car Diet Challenge next month. I signed up for it. I figured, I'm doing it anyway, why not get the goodie basket for it?

The rules are, active modes of transporation only. No cars, taxis, airplanes. Buses are ok. However, public transit in a small town is pitiful! No matter, I haven't gotten in a car in I don't know how long anyway. I commute, run errands, get groceries by bike. I usually jump at the chance to run errands by bike because it is an excuse to be on my bike. Generally I get in the car when my family is going somewhere and they want me to come. Sometimes I let them drive and I bike.

For the month of September I will not get in a car. I get to write about my experiences and I get freebies at the end of it.

That's a great idea. Is there by any chance a website for the group that will have reports?

Very cool! I'll be interested to hear about your experiences next month. Keep us posted!

Here in Portland, September is the Bike Commute Challenge, so I'll be doing that. Companies compete to see which can have the highest number of trips by bike. My company was 7th in our category last year - hopefully we'll do even better this year!

When I get the official site I'll post it, in the meantime I went ahead & started my journal on a blog.
My new favorite ever picture of myself is filling the gas tank strapped to my bike!

Mel, I'm 50 miles south of you and I'd like more info on the group. Sounds like a great idea, except that if we want anything beyond bread and milk we have to travel to Jeff or Columbia! I have, however, made a pledge to not ride my bike (even once) to my job. (Teacher) This is probably the ONLY thing that's positive about us not having rain.
