Dam Corners and Valleys road ride - Sat, May 19

Deja vu all over again and back by popular vote
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Like last year, we'll ride part of the Davis Double route on the same day just because. Maybe there will be a maillotpois and hubby sighting. In keeping with tradition, this ride will be a relaxed ramble through the countryside and NO DROP.

Starting in Winters, we’ll climb northwest toward Lake Berryessa, up the canyon alongside Putah Creek over the Monticello Dam and Cardiac Hill to the store at Moskowite Corner. From there, one more little bump up and then we fly down Wooden Valley (the Jo Zone) to Mankas Corners and on to Fairfield where we'll take a food break at Coffee World (with excellent peach smoothies). We’ll turn north, climb a few short rollers and then have a couple options:

-- One group can have a nice smooth ride all the way north back to Lake Solano Park via Pleasants Valley Rd.
-- Those who want more miles and hills can head east a few miles so they climb Gibson Canyon Road and up the rolling east side of Cantelow Hill. This group will come back over the ridge rejoining everyone midway through that nice smooth ride all the way north back to Lake Solano Park.

From Lake Solano, we'll spin around Lake Solano back to Winters.

Start: the town of Winters (parking lot at Railroad and Main across from the Putah Creek Cafe and next to Steady Eddy's Coffee House)
When: TBD, but it has to be really early to beat the boat traffic
Length: 62-67 (the shorter route is the reverse of the Monticello Century but starting in Winters)
Climbing: shorter ride 2,780 / longer ride 3,460 ft
Avg speed over the entire ride (including warm-ups): 14-15 mph

To get to Winters: Interstate 505 goes north right into Winters from I-80 or your can take Russell Blvd east out of Davis. http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?ed...=10&qty=9&ds=n

Food after - Pizza Factory or the Putah Creek Cafe or Steady Eddy's depending on what is open

Sounds excellent! Unless family matters come up, the Bobs will be there.

Every time you post this ride, I see Damn Corners, and wonder why SK is cussing at the ride route...

I hope I actually see you this year! I think we'll be starting DD relatively early to try to beat the heat (not likely!). We should be at the dam about 2 1/2 hours after we start (The dam's about our 40 mile point, isn't it? We've had this conversation before, haven't we? )

Deja vu again. Based on the 2005 route (which means no Cobb Mtn),

-- The town of Winters (our starting pt) is mile 35.6
-- The dam is at mile 45.5.
-- Moskowite Corner is at mile 56.0. This is not a stop for the Dble riders but will be our group's re-fuel pt and the point at which we continue west and you turn north.

What time are you thinking of starting? Earlier than last year?

I started a response at the office this morning and then got absoutely buried in work. So I will try again...

Well, the first part of the ride is the same with or without Cobb (I am assuming Cobb is in this year still, though). I don't remember what time we started last year, probably 6:30. If the forecast looks anything like last Saturday (which Lee Mitchell was swearing it would be as he was taping a reaplcement rear light to my bike at 9 pm on Saturday) then I would like to start as early as possible. I am so OVER heat! (I know you Wildflower survivors can relate...)

So anyway that probably puts us there too early for you guys as I believe it did last year. I just really like starting these doubles as early as possible to finish in light and also (now) for heat avoidance.

I can so do without Cobb, thankyee kindly.

Altho Lee says that there was a sandwich shop in Middleofnowheretown where he had the best steak sammich ever.

Lee Mitchell was doing SAG on DMD? Wow that guy sure gets around!

    Lee Mitchell

Lee's tireless. I'll get my report out eventually, but he is seriously my favorite ever person after the 400k and DMD. At DMD (on Sierra), I asked him if I was th elast person and he was all chipper saying oh no "There are people scattered all up and down the mountain (Hamilton)." I'm not entirely sure he wasn't lying to me, but I love him anyway.

And he looks like a skinny Santa.

How does Lee ride without tires?

Posted by me on last year's thread:

Got up at 4:15 to get the gang moving. Delivered robo and V to the Davis Double about 5:20 where they met up with MP and Mr. MP

I also discovered that usn's doing the smarter route started in Winters at 7 am. We saw HotRod going up to the Dam (and the official AV greeting was born), we didn't see MP. I don't remember if we saw V. Both of them could have been stopped at the Dam rest stop.

You're so funny! (And it's so early that I looked at that and went "tires? whaaa?")

So I guess we started at 5:30 or 6 then. That sounds reasonable. These things are often not entirely up to me....

Oh, that's right! We must commemorate the occasion in a suitably genteel fashion.

Im a maybe. Its my youngest boys birthday on Sunday and Im still not sorted on which day of the weekend we are doing the party.
Oooh this is just after my bike fit session though so it would be good to give the bike a whirl and see how it feels.
