bike + SLR ?

I was wondering if any of you ride with an SLR camera? And if so, what do you carry it in?

I always bring my P&S on the bike, but there are times when I'd like better camera gear, times when the point of the trip is to take pictures but I get there on my bike. I'd like to be able to bring the camera and a lens or two.

It seems like the best plan would be to use a smallish shoulder bag (rather than an on the bike bag) to keep the bumps absorbed by the camera to a minimum. But I'm wondering if anyone has found a camera-specific bag that is particularly comfortable?

I use a small Topeak handle bar bag:
http://www.topeak.com/2007/products/...ndlebarbag.php. It is nicely padded on the inside, is small and light enough to not affect steering and comes with its own rain cover. Those designers at Topeak are amazing.

I used to use a rear rack and bag, but I spent too much time twisiting round to get the camera. This Topeak bag fit my camera perfectly and would have room for a lens or two in its second compartment. With the camera in front I was more likely to stop, pull it out, and grab the shot I wanted than with it in the back.

The bag converts to a fanny pack off bike, but I put a shoulder strap on it instead. It is just me, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable with a shoulder bag. The handlebar bag has nice padding and, if I were to fall, the camera and I will survive much better if it is tucked away in the handlebar bag. But, I'm a klutz.

Thanks so much to you both for the help! I've been looking at some of the Lowe Alpine bags (I love them for hiking) but they don't seem to have anything that was designed to go on a bike. No way I'm riding with my big Orion backpack. The topeak bag looks perfect & I've ordered one. I like that the camera will be right there, I think I'll take a lot more pictures.
