Sheesh. I was up more than half the night with the insomnia. Nick at Night (Fresh Prince), TV Land (back-to-back MASH), and all manner of exercise equipment. At seven am I got up, ate cereal and took a shower. Now I'm sleepy. My day is shot. At least i can go back to bed with clean hair

Lovely sock! Lovely yarn too, luscious colors and looks cuddly soft. Also your knitting is nice and even. Are you sure this is your first sock?

Thanks, Duck! That's quite a compliment coming from that-sweater knitter!

It's my third sock, plus the other little projects I did just to practice. But I used to crochet lace, so there are some transferable skills.

The yarn is dyed that way to produce the stripes. If I had to change colors all the time I'd never do it!

Karen -- Thanks! I love mules, too. Saw my first ones - in person - when I rode the Covered Bridge Half Century in Lancaster in '07. Mules seem to be popular w/the Amish.

I missed the interview (or was it discussed earlier in this thread)? I've been told by several people that the phrase originated with the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, and meant a different type of experience altogether. It was only years after Jonestown that the meaning of the phrase morphed into something more negative.

this is a donkey bray. And I can't even listen to it.

a mule is a cross between a donkey Jack and a female horse.
Little known is the hinny, a cross between a horse stallion and a female donkey.
They aren't as popular, because they get most of their size from their mothers
so the mule is considered the more valuable animal. Either way, they get their smarts from the donkey, who is much cleverer than a horse.

A friend of mine has two donkeys in the next town over. They wake her up EARLY every morning to be fed. They are cute but loud. Having raised two daughters, I think I'll pass on the being-woken-up-at-the-crack-of-dawn-to-feed-hungry-mouths thing at this point in my life.

    {{{{now remembering having to watch Sesame Street at 5am every morning.....shudder}}}}

    Hey Tuck- fabulous sock!!!!!

    Tuckervil-

That is an awesome sock!! What yarn did you use?? I love the colors!

Warning: Socks are addictive! I tend to carry them everywhere with me, and work on them whenever I have a few extra minutes. You'd be amazed how much progress you can make! And yes, they will now allow knitting needles on an airplane!

Great socks Tuck! and lovely sweater mom (duck). I always take my knitting with me wherever I go (and have never had a problem with them on airplanes either, just remember to leave your tiny scissors at home). At the moment I'm working on a baby sweater as a break from all the socks and mittens and hats I've been making lately. But socks are good. Very quick to make so you don't run out of patience quite as easily. Took me many practice runs before I got good enough to make a matching pair though.

I'm so happy with the sock. I sat down this morning to start the mate, and I got all the way through the ribbing when I noticed something unacceptable. While trying to fix it, I got so frustrated with it, I pulled it all out and GOT UP TO CLEAN THE HOUSE INSTEAD! Now that's frustrated!

But I feel competent about it, as long as I don't have to go back and fix anything.

We're driving to Nashville tonight, and I usually do the driving...don't know how to talk hubby into driving so I can knit!

CA, I used Regia Design Line, which is why it was so expensive. It came with a pamphlet featuring the (Dutch? Swiss? oh wait, maybe German) designer. I wish the yarn was bulkier, but I didn't have much choice. The socks are a little looser than my last pair.

Duck, what would happen if I used 2.5 mm needles instead of 3 mm? I realize the knit would be tighter, but would I have to adjust the pattern for that tiny little difference?

What would happen is that your sock would be a little less loosely knit and thus very slightly snugger and very slightly smaller overall. If that's what you want then that's good. You don't have to adjust your pattern for a small change in needle size.

Yeah, that's what I thought. The pattern I've been using even calls for 2-3 mm needles.

    Thanks!
