Sarah - I have a Nishiki mixte too, in fact, I just got home from a ten mile shopping expedition on her. Mine is a dull bronzy color- I like your color better. I replaced the saddle on mine, but nothing quite as pricey as a Brooks.
It's such a fun way to get around for errands.

I got a crazy good deal on the Brooks ($65).. or it would have cost me more than the bike

Do you know the year? You can figure it out from the serial number.

Here are some pics of my 1972 Carlton build. Thanks to Sasha at Citizen Chain in SF for the custom work.

Still working on the stem/handle bar configuration. I'm not liking the look of the tall stem. We also used a temporary Deore derailleur until I decide if my cluster has enough range for my liking; it does so I will be getting an Ultegra derailleur.

I went with 1 x 9 gearing just for fun. Sasha made a custom thumb shifter out of an Ultegra down tube shifter so I could have indexed shifting! We built new 27 inch wheels with shimano 105 hubs. The bike is super light for its age.

Porteur rack from VO to come. And maybe fenders, but I kind of like how quiet she rides and I know fenders add a bit of "rattle" noise.

Oh, that is schweet! I's like to get a better look at that thumb shifter configuration, though.

I don't think fenders will rattle at all.

That's what rubber washers are for

Yay.. I think I am 99% done for now.. the only semi-urgent thing left to do is figure out how to attach that rack some way other than with a zip tie on the seatpost

She rides really nice.. I'm glad I found her

Look for a Monostay adaptor. It will clamp on the seatpost and give you two points to mount the rack stays.
Oil is good, grease is better.

She's a real beauty! Where did you get the color-match bottle cage?

It came with it! I would almost suspect that it's original to the bike - or at least purchased to match while it was newer.. I have a blue bontrager bottle cage on my trek and it's quite a bit darker.

How about a Mixte MTB... this has got to be the weirdest one I've seen on CL so far: http://houston.craigslist.org/bik/1549663250.html

ETA, a pic, in case the listing goes poof..
