You could buy a whole bunch at Walmart, then make a monetary donation to a food bank or medical emergency fund or homeless shelter to help the folks who work at Walmart make it on the low wages and lack of benefits.

I lived in a little town that got a Walmart. It was pretty devastating. I've become a bit of a passive activist (is there such a thing?). I try to buy stuff only at places that pay living wages and give decent benefits to all employees even if it costs me more. I figure if I'm getting something cheap at Walmart, it's only because I'm ripping the food or medicine from one of their employees for the lower price.

Guilt. Guilt. Guilt. And I'm not even Catholic...

    since this is thread drift...

I got so sick last night. Rode home from the clinic thinking I was going to puke the whole 3 miles. Wondered how someone like Corsair with a long, uphill commute would've done it. Started puking, etc, once I got home. My sister came over and helped, changed my sheets, etc. I was down for the count. Supposed to start a call shift at 7 am, called around, got someone to cover for me, last puked at midnight, got up at 5 am, ate some saltines and gatorade, came into work at noon, doing ok. Just feel tired and dryyyy. Drinking water, gingerale, gatorade. Praying for a pretty quiet day.

Plus...my DSL and phone lines are down at home. No computer at home. Cell phone OK. All of this will pass...blech.

Oh, you poor girl! Thank goodness your sister could come over to help you. I'm just amazed you went to work after all that!

Thanks, guys. The thing with being on call is that you can't just cancel it, like you could a clinic. The patients will go into labor no matter what. If I'd still been puking, my colleagues would've found a way to cover for me. We're into vacation season, though, and the half that aren't out of town this weekend are already working in a clinic or on call. I still feel like a wrung out dishrag, but the nurses are helping me, and (knock wood), I have only one pt so far, who's not needing much from me. Off call in 3 hr, 48 min!

I am so lucky to have my sister in town. It helped so much.

I don't know if it was a virus or food poisoning, but it's like that 300# gorilla. You stop dancing when IT says so!

I hope you feel better Lise - that's lousy, especially since you had to go to work. Good of the nurses to help you out. I'm wishing you a quiet rest of the shift.

KnottedYet - good idea on the donations. I detest Walmart, it's killing the local stores. We have the biggest Walmart in the state - in a town of 15,000 people. Go figure. I do my best to shop elsewhere and online when I can, but for some things it's either just way too much cheaper or it's the only option. That stinks, but that's how it is. Hopefully soon we'll be out of here and we can shop at better stores that treat their employees better.

I did tons of yardwork today - after my 28 mile ride this morning. I felt great after the ride, but now from squatting down and trimming copious amounts of myrtle-like vegetation, I can barely bend my right knee. My back isn't too happy either! Aargh! I'm going to do a short ride tomorrow morning more to recover from the yardwork than the ride. I WAS planning to run, but I'm thinking the knee won't appreciate that!

Hope you're feeling better soon, Lise.

A friend of mine from NY used to be an OB nurse at your hospital. How long have you been there?

and don't get me started on Walmart

I got new Mavic wheels for my 10+ year old but much beloved GT commuter.

My LBS just e-mailed me that they are ready and I can pick them up tomorrow.

He says "PS She looks sooooooooooooooooooooo COOL!"

with exactly this many "o"s: ooooooooooooooooooooo.

'fraid now I won't be able to resist having her re-painted. He says he can get a nice professional powder coat, take her apart, strip, clean, repaint, back together for about $175.00.

But if I do that I'll do it in winter when I'm riding less I think.

    Pink maybe?

    Pink would be glorious!!!

Everytime I go to Walmart I curse and fuss about how much I hate the place. I try to go as little as possible. The difference in quality between the "real" products and the walmart version is just dispicable (sp?) to me. The Kryptonite lock is a classic example. Oops - sorry. I can't help but rant about it. Didn't mean to get you started

    ugh.

I survived. I hate to say it, but I was glad when my patient ended up with a c-section, because the smells of birth were going to do me in. Plus, she's 4' 11", and the baby was 9# 2 oz. Not gonna happen.

I feel like my guts are on spin cycle, but no more puking (knock wood). I ate a little bit, am going to eat a little more now, try to sleep. Back on call for 12 hr starting tomorrow night at 10PM. blech.

I feel like I will never run again. I know that's not true, but I just can't even imagine it.

I've been at Masonic off and on for many years. I was a triage nurse at a womens' center there in the early 90s, then a student midwife in '93-94, doing births, and back as a staff midwife since Nov. 2003.

Brina, love your new avatar. Your pup? Name? Story?

Lise, I hope you feel better soon.

Fishdr-i too hate Walmart & don't even live in North America...I hated the fact that it was the main place to shop where my mom was living when i last visited Canada...

I try so hard to buy at the small guy type businesses...I feel so bad buying at the big boys...I'll pay extra if it means a small business stays afloat...

did you ever work with a nurse named Annie from NY? She was there for about 2 years, I want to way 2002/2003. I could be wrong, it may have been earlier.

Thanks, Lise. That is Brina, she from whom I stole my screen name. She is 10 years old now. She is a rott with an identity crisis - she loves to swim, play fetch and is incredibly friendly - apparently she thinks she is a lab. We also have a male rottie and a female mixed breed. Yeah, we are the crazy people with the three kids and three dogs.

I do, too. But in this case, we don't have any locals that carry Clifbars or Sportbeans. It's the lesser of three evils...They're all chains of some sort or other ... Kroger - grocery store, Walgreens - big pharmacy/and everything else store and do carry sportbeans, and Walmart - need I say more. IT's very frustrating.

We used to live next store to the owners of a local hardware store. We still go there for hardware, lumber, plumbing - even though they're pricier.
