Puppy Woes

I have 2 males(9 and 8 months now) and my SOs brother has a male about 4 months older.

A few months ago(probably going back 3-4 months now) the SO's brother's dog was peeing on our dogs when they were together! And let me tell you, his dog is a 12 lb cock-a-poo and I have 2 doodles(they were probably about 40 and 60 lbs at this point).

It is definitely a male marking trait(the cock-a-poo marks everything, yet my 2 males have never marked 1 thing- so all dependent on the dog) and it doesn't seem to matter if it is a male or female they are marking, lol

Back on the leash is a good idea, or maybe take a spray bottle with you and if he goes to do it spray him? So he associated marking with a negative reaction.

I'd have to agree about the marking thing. I had my leg peed on by a male dog at the dog park once. LOL Guess he claimed me as his property.

If he was doing it while she was peeing, he may have been trying to pee over her pee. Dogs do this in households as a hierarchy thing. He who pees last over everyone else's pee is king.

I would also stay away from aversive punishment while he is peeing outside. You run the risk of undoing all your potty training. Dogs don't really make associations with their actions as we do - he may see it as "don't potty outside!" and not "don't pee on the other dog!"

my male dog Sammy sniffs and lifts his leg. then he pees - looking is not part of the ritual. He has peed on both of the other dogs, my ankle, my husbands ankle....if you move it doesn't bother him, he's peeing onto a smell he needs to pee on. most of us have not noticed in time. ;-) tokie

Our vet did not recommend neutering until 6 months, his appointment will be on 11/2. Westtexas, I know you're a vet, do you think it will lessen this?

Oddly Heidi is very much the alpha dog which is why I think she didn't relaize or she would have usually put Jens in his place. In fact Heidi will mark until she can't pee anymore. I never knew females marked until Heidi, she even used to lift her leg somewhat. But now that she is getting so old she is just happy to stand and do her business, apparently zoned out to being peed on!

Poor Heidi! Maybe if you named him Andy instead of Jens, he'd be an easier puppy. Sometimes I think there's something about names that influences personality. I still named my cat after "the Cannibal".
