Very true. I'm a fiber artist, and while dyeing polyester fibers can be done at home, the fumes are HORRIBLE. Nylon can be dyed easily using acid dyes (they sound worse than they really are!), and you can get some beautiful color with them.
Cotton, rayon, tencel, etc can be dyed with cool-water fiber-reactive dyes very easily at home. This includes all cellulose fibers (plant fibers) such as linen, hemp, ramie, etc.
For jerseys that I design, I usually end up doing something along the lines of applique or fabric paint. Works great!!
