You could also just wear a pair of unlined athletic shorts or knit shorts/capris over a regular (spandex) pair of cycling shorts if that makes you more comfortable.
I started riding wearing baggy (MTB) cycling shorts with a padded liner because I was afraid of how fat I would look in spandex.. but I honestly found them uncomfortable because the outer shorts material was not stretchy and it would bunch up, and I'd have to stop and "fix" my shorts, and I quickly got over it and just started wearing regular cycling shorts/knickers and not worrying what I look like. You shouldn't worry either
I prefer knickers to shorts, and bibs to anything with a waistband, but you'll find what you prefer over time.
