Looking for Olympic length triathlons in Pacific NW in 2010

    To disable ads, please log-in.

So I am on the hunt for Olympic length triathlons in the Pacific Northwest for the upcoming season. These are the ones I know about so far: In June, Blue Lake, Cascade Edge, Pacific Crest. In July, Hagg Lake. In September, Black Hills (Olympia) and Black Diamond. Oh yeah, and Grand Columbian, which I hear has a difficult hill to ride coming right out of the water.

Do any of you know of any others? I'm trying to settle on my goal races for next year in the next few weeks and would like to know whatever else may be out there. Thanks!

Www.trifind.com has extensive listings all across the country. That's how I find my tris.

FWIW, I had a great time at the Black Diamond tri in September. It's a small race that's very well run.

Salsa - I have the June Blue Lake Oly on my race calendar too. I'm opting for the Half Iron at Pac Crest. I did the Oly there this year and really enjoyed it. I've done Black Hills in the past, too. One of these days I'll get out there again. It's got a great trail run. I'd like to do Hagg, but it never seems to fit my schedule. Too bad - it's in my back yeard.

Out here, there's one in Coeur d'Alene, and one in Spokane that was new this year. I did them both. (There might be others, but I don't think so - the only other local races I know of are sprints and one Half-Iron)

The Coeur d'Alene is a lake swim, a relatively hilly bike (some sustained climbing), and a pretty much flat run. It's pretty well ran and popular with the locals. I think everyone who does Olympic distance triathlons that lives here does this race. Unless they hate hills.

The Spokane is a "lake" swim (it's actually a reservoir on the river but they call it a lake), a rolling bike (climbs, but not really sustained), and a flat run on mostly dirt (not technical trail, just paths in the dirt through trees). Their website leads me to believe they'll be doing it again next year - though after the race some guy that lives local to the lake sent in water samples and found toxic algae bloom levels thousands of times over the safe limit. It was pretty well-ran for a first-time race, though small.

Aaaand that's the extent of my local knowledge

    I know you'll like it.

Did I mention it's almost all downhill?

You scared me with that pole thing.

Thank you for the info! I am trying to find one where the run is not VERY hilly, because I am not such a great runner. I plan to entertain myself next week by doing a little spreadsheet of all these with info like "swim shorter than usual" and "run VERY hilly"--can you tell I'm paranoid about that one?--and then talk it over with my coach and pick a couple of Olys, and a couple of sprints as well.

I don't mind "hard", in general. I will be glad to do a full Oly swim and I might not be as fast on the bike as I would like but I can do a hilly course. I am just such a new and relatively slow runner that I would like it not to move from "hard" to "awful".

There is one called Scoggins Valley in September that follows the Hagg Lake course if you'd rather do it later in the year.

That one is right in my backyard (literally), so I'm tempted. I'm also tempted by the Black Hills one...but of course, I have to get my first sprint under my belt first.

Hey, GLC, what's the May sprint you're doing? I would like to get a sprint in in May so that I can then try my first Oly at Blue Lake June 6.

Oh, got it! Thanks. I think Susan Otcenas may have done this one last year.

I did Scoggin's one year. It's a good race but it is a fairly hilly course both on the bike and the run.

Yes, it is...but it's no mountain climb. No doubt it would be a challening event though! It's a gorgeous route - we bike that way all the time as it's just a 10 minute ride from my house.
