Giro to start in USA?

Word is Mayor Fenty wants the Giro d'Italia to start in Washington DC. Am I the only person who thinks this is a crazy idea?

Not that it wouldn't be fun to watch, but a trans-atlantic transfer would be awfully hard on the riders. And they'd have to have an early day off in order to get the race back to Italy.

Crazy. Deadly. The long flights would be awful. I can't imagine racers taking a "rest" day seated on a trans-Atlantic flight ...

Let's have our own Giro here; Tour de California, Giro de the Rockies, Vuelta de Texas Hill Country .... let's boost American Cycling and hey, how about featuring the women's teams while we're at it.

I think it'd be cool to have a big race like that start in the States but in reality it's a terrible idea. It would be a logistical nightmare. If the US wants a big cycling a event then we need to organize one ourselves or make the existing events (Tour of California, Georgia, Missouri, etc) more prestigious.

+1. Then maybe someday a mayor in Europe will ask "what if we could have the women's division of the Tour de Georgia start in Nice, France?"
