Oakleaf, I called Garmin and they said that the 305 and the 405 Forerunner have the same auto-pause features. They are default off, you have to go into each option you use (running, cycling) and switch it on. Guess my friend had not figured that out yet. The real difference between the 305 and 405 is the size: the 405 is made more the size of 'normal' watch, and it displays 3 fields of data on the screen at a time instead of 4. It does have a shorter battery life (8 hours as opposed to 10 hours with the 305).
