    Book Recommendation

I saw it on here somewhere- "Heft On Wheels" by Mike Magnuson. We were supposed to go to Amazon and look at the contrast between the front and back cover photos. I was amazed. So I bought the book. It's a wonderful book about a man who loves cycling. It's not a how-to book, but the story of how he changes his life. But he isn't a fat guy saved by cycling- he's been a cyclist all his life- he just uses it to make a major change. I loved this book- didn't want it to end.

Here's my favorite quote (shortened greatly) from the book:

"In brief, I look like a poseur. An old guy with a five-thousand-dollar bike and access to a bottle of Nair.

Oh well. But if you want to buy a high-end bike and get into road racing, this is something you're going to have to get over, you're gonna look like a poseur, but that's not something to be ashamed of. You can't stop participating in a sport because there are professional-level people who can obliterate you at it. A sport is about a lifestyle, about health and fitness and happiness, and you want to try hard, of course, you want to do your best, but you'll have to accept that other people's best will frequently be better than yours."

Nanci - sounds like a great read ( eeerrrr I can hear my bookshelf groaning already) and might be another way I can enjoy two of my loves at the same time - cycling and reading - well at least safely.

    more good books

    T-

Have you read "Downhill: The Story Of A Gravity Goddess" by Marla Streb? Since you MTB, I think you would love it. Actually, I think anyone would love it.

I am also waiting to read "Lance Armstrong's War" and "Inside The Postal Bus."

One of the best books I've read this year is "Swimming To Antartica" about long distance cold water swimming.

A really good read is "Miles from No Where," by Barbara Savage. The author writes about her and her husband's bicycle adventure around the world. On a whim, they decided to use their house savings on travelling around the world on bikes, and they didn't even ride bikes that much in the first place. Its a wonderful story, and the author writes it well.

Thanks for the recommendations for "Helf on Wheels", etc....I'm always looking for a good read when it comes to adventure or bicylce related books.

    Happy riding!

Nanci - I agree about swimming to Antarctica its a great book. Lynne Cox is an inspiration for everyone but especially people undertaking ultra endurance events.
