Road trip, food & lack of exercise

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I'm a bit concerned about our upcoming road trip. We will be driving for about 3 1/2 4days, 12-16hrs on each one. This applies to the return road trip as well.

I know we can bring fruit, raisins, drink mainly water but i there are a few small issues..

We can't take fruit into South Australia
There aren't any health food type shops between Perth & Broken Hill(NSW) and beyond..
It's hard to find good coffeeee along the way

Exercise-this might be a bit hard & the only chance we'll really have is when we change drivers. That and it might be 43C in some places & no shade.

    Any ideas?

We're renting bikes once we get to Auckland & will be doing some mtn biking . I even get to meet MillieNZ

Ah, coffee when traveling. I found a small kettle for heating water that plugs into the cigarette lighter/outlet. It's really just an immersion heater with a kettle built around it. But it does, eventually, heat water to boiling. With a small travel French press you are in business.

I do yoga stretches during driving breaks, or power walk around a bit. Do you have what we call rest stops, or parks? You could jump rope, or run a little, if it's not too hot.

I always bring food when traveling. A small cooler holds cheese and boiled eggs, perhaps a salad or raw vegetables. Decent bread, juice, and whey protein are travel staples.

    aaa

Pam, there are rest stops but not as good as the ones in the US!! They're basically just spots on the side of the road with a rubbish bin & a few trees.

A skipping rope would do the trick!!

When my dad was sick I did the 17 hour non-stop drive to Florida over and over again, getting out for a walk or, if I had company, throwing a ball around was great for loosening up. As for eating I think I had some better options than you'll have...but how about taking along nuts, are those allowed?

I have a few cross country drives under my belt...
Have found that stretching my fingers all the way to the sky, then wiggling like I was a silly 4 yr old is a good warm up. Then sprint as hard and fast as I can does wonders. Of course I have EIA, so I don't run very far Anyway, I'd jog around where-ever I decided I needed to stretch my legs, wake up, my dogs needed a walk, or something just looked interesting and needed investigating.

I have noticed that our counvience stores / gas stations do offer fresh fruit, so don't give up, there may be something out there to buy. Maybe not the best quality, but something. What about the good old stand-by, canned fruit, packed in fruit juice? Since it's your summer, a tropical fruit cocktail? Do you have the individual sizes for lunch boxes like we do here in the states?

Another idea other than PamNY's is to take a camp stove (have one of those?), boil your own water, and brew coffee in a french press or stove top espresso maker. (Got to admit I have all three. Was a Girl Scout.... "Be Prepared" )

Have fun on your road trip! Send us photos!!!

Yeah, if you can't plug in to electricity, this won't help. An electric tea kettle for heating up your water. I have never tried plugging it into the power converter I keep in my car for my laptop, but I'm not sure it would work. I know it won't run a shop vac from the car battery!

But a one burner camp stove would do it. And canned fruit. Can you take dried fruit into SA?

I have a whole work out that requires no equipment, takes about 30 minutes and can be done all in one place. Master Your Body
The picture of the guy on the front is the PT I go to boot camp with.

You can also do jumping jacks to get the old heart rate up, but the jump rope is a good idea, too. And a walk about!
