Just as I was thinking I need to call the Alliance Francaise to sign up for french lessons this quarter, I get the following email from our IT people:
We will be moving some CGlobe servers this morning in order to make room for the new Quad Processor DL 580's we need to use in the Production Fusion servers. We are hopeful everything will be re-attached and up by 10:00 AM CST.
I recognize the words as english based, but I have no clue what they're talking about.
Like I'm supposed to be impressed by a Quad Processor DL 580? Does it come as a 480? Or not as whiz-bang as a 1000? I supposed a Quad Processor is better than a solo processor? And what the heck is a Production Fusion server? Re-attached? Were they ever detached?
What I need to know is that the server will be down, IT is doing maintenance (I hesitate to say "upgrades"), and it should be back up in a couple of hours.

haha...I am married to an IT guy (he actually built one of the computers and the server at my office) I deal translating his language on a daily basis!!! All I want to know is what button to push so I can move on and do what I do...I do NOT need to know WHY I am pushing that button.....![]()
I am a nobody; nobody is perfect, and therefore I am perfect.
We get those all the time at work. Rambling emails about they are moving this server or that server. I never know why it is significant and never notice a thing so it just wastes my time hitting DELETE.![]()

I think I'll stick with French.
We have a rule at our office (I'm on the Technology Committee...)...only describe technology in a way that I can understand.
The computers are one thing, but networking and communication protocols are way out there...
If you don't grow where you're planted, you'll never BLOOM - Will Rogers
It looks like a direct translation from the Chinese of the original manual.
All they have to say is "the network (or whatever) will be down from ? until ? for maintenance."
And they say lawyers are bad.
I work in an IT department. We laugh because our new department head can cram more buzzwords into a sentence than anyone we've ever met. He "leverages" things instead of using them. Instead of deciding we can make use of a software tool, "It's in our space". You don't provide reports any more, you "expose information to the user".
I don't know what's wrong with good old standard English.
It always seems to be the upper management IT people that talk this way. We have a pompous a$$ too, you should have seen his email about the new copy machines that were being installed.![]()
I can imagine. In his first week on the job, we had a dandy email from him (ours, not yours) about the problem solving techniques he expects us to employ, as though we knew nothing since he knew nothing about us.
Yeah, and this morning I "experienced a power circuit failure"
the electricty was out in my cube due to a blown fuse.
and it wasn't my fault, I wasn't here... the coffee pot was OFF
