Have a Gala in my lunch box.
A couple of years ago I was up in Mass, and was told by a gal in my office to try to get a fresh picked Macintosh apple. Well our conference paid for a basket full to be delivered every day. They were wonderful, not mealy like the ones I get in the grocery. BUT, I brought one home, didn't eat it for a couple of days, and when I did - it was mealy! Apparently the shelf life of crunchyness is very short. Same as Red Delicious - fresh from the tree, they're wonderful, put them in storage then sell at the grocery - not so delicious.
Which is why I like Galas or Pink Ladies. We get some heirloom apples down from Arkansas at our local farmers market that are mightly tasty too.
