I bought my bright orange Townie a few weeks ago, and have been jazzing it up to ride in style every day. I ordered the Pink/Orange Basil Blossom panniers last night. Most of my rides have been to and from the bike shop, but I did one big day (for me, so far) of 8 miles to school, the grocery store, and back home. I was hoping to ride in my usual jeans and t-shirt, but it got uncomfortable in the 96 degree heat towards the end.
I had a bit of an idea for a more comfortable ride. I bought a set of black "moisture wicking" shorts and tank top. Then I can ride to school and throw on a mid-length wrap-around skirt and change into sandals. The combo looks surprisingly good on me. I'm not the most fashionable person.
What do you guys wear for commuting, and do you change clothes when you get there?
Welcome to TE!
I typically only ride in moisture-wicking material now. I even work out in moisture-wicking material instead of cotton now since being introduced to it while cycling.
Since my commute is 15-16 miles in one direction and I have to dress business professional for work, I wear the full get-up: lycra with padding and if not a cycling jersey definitely the moisture-wicking shirts. I am lucky in that I have showers at work.
The Townie is a great bike and hope you're enjoying your Basil panniers!

Welcome TJ-Relic
Although I don't commute regularly, I do on occasion bike to a meeting or a appointment where I need to change. Your choice of clothes sounds good. I would change out of the bike shorts and into some underwear though because you can breed bacteria in the shorts, as well as you will probably be more comfortable in underwear.
If I am not going somewhere where I have to be professional, I tend to take a skirt like you and just wear my jersey, and change out of the shorts.
Good luck.

I don't think I would be more comfortable in underwear. I have those thighs that tend to touch no matter what, and wearing skirts without shorts has always been very uncomfortable for me. Is bacteria growth a concern if I wear a clean pair every day? My commute is only 6mi round trip.

I agree. wear your underwear. If it's really hot you might consider getting shorts that are not black.
My 4 miles each way commute is cool in the morning so i wear jeans or whatever i am planning on wearing to work, but when it starts getting warm out i carry bike shorts to wear home.
