Honeymoons -Off topic

Thom and I were babies when we got married. Three days after the ceremony he had to go back to Camp Pendelton and I stayed in Maine for another month since we couldn't afford to live together yet. Needless to say we didn't have a honeymoon. I just asked him why we've never had one. His answer, "What's the difference between a honeymoon and a vacation?"

Where did you go on your honeymoon? The funnier the story, the better of course.

we had three days in the Santa Cruz mtns. We drove down there with hubby's brother in the truck as it was the resort he worked at. We did get some funny looks, the three of us in the rig with "just married" on it.

our second was much better, two weeks in the Yucatan.

We didn't have a honeymoon either! I was pg when we got married and we needed to save every dime we had so we decided we'd go a little later. But, believe it or not, "a little later" never came and we've never taken a vacation just the two of us!

September, though, we're going to France for 2 weeks! It was my 11th anniversary present to my dh. (well, and then there's the marathon that I'm running while we're there... I guess its a present for both of us. )

We put our honeymoon money into a charter trip with a bunch of other grad students. We were supposed to go to the Dry Tortugas, off Key West, FL. Everyone assured us we could pitch our tent on the far side of the island and people would respect our privacy. When we got to Key West, the charter boat captain had found a fishing trip that would pay better than our group and refused to take us to the island. The group wound up on Pigeon Key, which is an island in the middle of the old Key West bridge that is used as a marine biology station. We slept in dormitory/barracks with the night being punctuated by people getting up to turn the only fan so it stirred the air at their end of the hallway. It was miserable. We didn't get another chance until the kids were at band camp in high school. Then we went camping at Acadia Nat. Park. That was fabulous, maybe even worth the wait.

We went to Jamaica for our honeymoon. A dozen bad things happened, but here are the highlights.

My husband got an ear infection from scuba diving. We had planned to spend 1 night in Miami before returning to California. But the cabin pressurization of the airplane made his ear infection worse.

We went to see a doctor in Miami, he said Robert shouldn’t fly for 7 to 10 days and gave him antibiotics. We spent a week playing monopoly in our hotel room.

After a week, we went back to the doctor. The ear infection was improving, but the doctor recommended not flying for another week…. Or… an option would be to relieve the pressure in Robert’s ear. Removing the pressure involved piercing his eardrum with a needle!

The flight home was just fantastic!! And to top it all off, we landed in San Francisco, and our luggage went to San Diego!

We have never considered taking a second honeymoon!!!

Twenty years ago we went to Disney World for our honeymoon. We stayed at a hotel in Orlando and my husband thought it would be a good idea to stand up on the bed and test the smoke alarm, since we were on the eighth floor. Afterwards, we left our room to go out on the town. The alarms were ringing all over the hotel. There were workers running around our floor checking rooms. Not sure if it was his little test that set everything off but we didn't hang around to find out. Of course they had the elevators shut down so we had to walk down all the stairs to the lobby.

Everytime we've stayed at a hotel since, my husband thinks it's funny to act like he's going to test the alarm again. My daughter does the same thing. She even had her boyfriend doing it on the last ski trip we went on.

Blaine and I went to Port Townsend, WA for our honeymoom. We had wanted to go to a remote bay on Vancouver Island to do a kayaking/hiking honeymoon, but found out it would take forever to get there and involve an exeedingly long ferry trip or the expense of hiring a float plane. So we settled for Port Townsend, which is very beautiful and charming.

The first night (the day after our wedding) we went to a wonderful restaurant suggested by our innkeeper. Afterwards, we drove to the west coast to watch the incredible sunset. Bear in mind that Blaine was sick with an intestinal bug for the few days leading up to our wedding. So we're on this remote beach, watching the sunset, and I realize that I need to *go* really bad. We start back to the car, and it's getting to be an emergency. We're heading back into town on a two lane road and get behind THE SLOWEST driver in the universe. There's no way we're going to make it back to town before I have a messy accident all over the car, at this point. We start searching for an advantageous place to stop when Blaine spots a Porta-Potty near a construction site on the side of the road. I make him get out of the car first to make sure it's not locked. Praise the urological gods... it's open. I make it. I struggle for most of the remainder of the trip with a very sensitive tummy, but we still have fun. Blaine and I did not live together before we got married, and we, erm, waited, so it was definitely an ice breaker, so to speak!

We still got to do all the stuff we planned, like sea kayaking and bike riding (we rented a tandem). We went to Victoria for a day and Blaine came down with strep throat and started running a fever as we were waiting for the ferry to take us back to Port Angeles. We go to the doctor in the morning and get some antibiotics. Blaine is a total trooper, though, and we went hiking in Olympic National Park that day.

All in all, we had a really wonderful honeymoon. I'd like to go back to PT some day. Sorry this was like the longest post in the history of the board.

Neil and I never had a honeymoon. When we got married, I had been unemployed for about 10 months at that point and was starting a new job 3 days after the wedding. Originally, we had planned to go to Europe and visit different places. Neil has family in Holland since he's half-dutch. His mother was born there.

We had a camping/mountain biking honeymoon in Colorado and Utah, a new trail in a different area every day!
We did receive some applause immediately after taking a port-a-shower in a wooded but apparently not unoccupied area....

This is a funny thread. We went to Sedona, AZ in December. Mind you, we lived in Phoenix, so it was a quick trip. We rented a lovely cabin on Oak Creek, but there was not much to do in Sedona in the winter, in 1979. We decided to go up to Flagstaff for a movie, it snowed and we ended up in a ditch on I-17. We got out just before the highway patrol came to give to tickets to people who didn't have chains on. My husband had not driven in snow in a few years and i never had.... this makes me laugh now that I live in snow country. We were so bored, we came home a day early.
We have been on many vacations with the kids, San Diego, Mexico, Cape Cod. etc. and all over New England. We had a better honeymoon in Puerta Vallarta a couple of years later. In the last year, we have traveled a lot... Italy, Germany, England, Hilton Head, Virginia, Lake Placid, Mt. Washington, NH., Vermont. We go back to AZ every other year. This summer we are going to the Berkshires, Hilton Head again and then on a 6 day cycling trip from Prague to Vienna. It's great once those kids leave!!!

We went for one night at the Eskimotel in Wasilla, Alaska. The room next door had two nuns as occupants. (This was back when nuns still wore habits). Since I was a former Catholic School girl...it really put a damper on my wedding night.

We got to have a honeymoon because 20 years ago I was working as a nurse in the ICU was making pretty good money at the time, ($7.00/hour). We took a cruise that went from NY to Bermuda. It was great until we hit Cape Hatteras and they had to take all the bottles off the bar because of the 30+ foot seas. My DH got so seasick that he turned green. I always thought "turning green" was an expression until I saw him. Once we hit dry dock we were both fine and had the honeymoon that most 20 somethings can have. We are talking about going back to Bermuda for our 20 year celebration but we ain't going on the boat again...
