Hooray for El Dorado County! I just posted a reply to your post in New Riders. We're practically neighbors! I haven't ridden In Rescue/El Do Hills yet, but I highly recommend the Apple Hill area for some scenic (but challenging) rides. Unfortunately, now that the Apple Hill season has officially begun, weekends are shot. You'd have to ride super early in the morning to avoid the traffic. Otherwise you'll get killed (I'm not exaggerating). A fews months ago, I did a ride off of Greenstone...we went out South Shingle and came back on French Camp. That was fun but I wouldn't do it alone. And Iron Mountain Rd. (aka Mormor Immigrant) is great too, but once again, you need a riding buddy.

Sounds to me like you and me and michelem need to get together for a ride!

Welcome fng911. I live in Folsom and ride in your neck of the woods on occasion. On Saturday mornings I ride with the CycleFolsom "C Group" - Saturday ride routes are posted on Wednesdays at http://www.cyclefolsom.com/webforms/grouprides.aspx. CycleFolsom has 3 groups:

A Group You should be capable of riding 100 miles with 10,000 ft of climbing in ~6.5 hours (~17mph avg).

B Group You should be capable of riding 70 miles with 8,000 ft of climbing in ~4.5 hours (~16mph avg).

C Group You should be capable of riding 30 miles on flat land in ~2 hours (~15mph avg).

The longest ride the C Group has done is approximately 75 miles (Folsom to Davis and back). We've been doing shorter rides lately (35-45 miles) with an average of 2500 feet of climbing. So, the group categories aren't really representative of what we really do. The beauty of the C Group is that it is a no-drop group, whereas the A/B groups will drop you like a hot potato.

Oh, sorry! I just read your intro in the New Riders forum and didn't realize you are just starting out. I'm thinking this group might be more up your alley, although it looks like they are already 1/2-way through their "fall" training series:

It looks like the Sacramento Bike Hikers are starting a Thursday Night Easy Riders route on September 20.

6:30 PM.............................. Grade: E/D20-30
The series begins tonight and runs through winter. Meet at Five Points Shopping Center (Located in Carmichael, on the southwest corner of Fair Oaks Blvd and Arden Way. Park along the Arden Way side of the parking lot.) We use the bike trail and a few less-traveled streets. Lights required front/rear. Leader: Charlie Archuleta 731-8749

I practiced on my own 'til I got better and then joined the CF "C Group" when they first started up (May of this year). Our first ride was on the ARP and we went from Karen's Bakery (historic Folsom) to Sac State and back at an average 16mph. I could barely move the rest of the weekend! Fast-forward 4 months later and riding the entire ARP loop is nothing. I'm still not that great of a rider compared to others, but I really enjoy seeing my own improvement. I'm not out to compete against anyone but myself!

Yes, you, me, and Sara will need to ride together one of these days.

I can't believe I didn't mention this before...anyway, the Placerville Bike Shop does Wednesday night rides all around the County. Well, I don't mean they ride all around the County in one night, but they do rides in various parts of the County. Anyway, I'm not sure if these will be continuing into the fall since it's getting dark earlier, but Bob at the bike shop (he's the owner) is an awesome guy and he really looks out for new riders. I would highly recommend his shop for repairs or anything else. I've been extremely happy with the service.
