My apologies - I hadn't registered light-weight / warm-weather part of your question!

Quite a few of the women here sew their own shorts and jerseys (I used to before I started full-time work) and I am thinking it must not be too difficult to sew tights in lycra, not in the warmer fleecey stretch.

I am also thinking there is probably a niche market here for some entrepeuneur (spelling?) to make summer tights which provide UV protection but are not too hot... I really think there would be quite a few cyclists who do looong hours in summer who would get into this product.

That is one reason I wear mens shorts (apart from they tend to be cheaper) but they also tend to be longer and I am really aware of skin cancer and sun saftey.

Too bad De Soto doesn't make "leg coolers" - their arm coolers are really neat! Oh Susan.......

Or perhaps we could figure out what fabric that is and make our own.

I often ride in knickers in the summer - the lighter ones like PI Sugar Knickers work well, or Shebeest.

I'm most concerned about the tops of my knees which are in the direct sunlight (and my legs).

I've already had a skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma) removed from my nose. Even though that's not the dangerous kind (slow-growing, anyway) it was more of an ordeal than I care to repeat, so I'm religious about applying sun screen. Still, I get SO hot that I find I'd rather wear tanks in the heat of the summer. I wonder if there is such a thing as long-sleeves or long-legs that I could tolerate in Dallas heat.

Michele - have you tried Performance Bike? There's one over on Sunrise Blvd. by Trader Joes. I bought a pair of Performance brand tights there that are pretty much the same thickness as my shorts. They are mens but they were cheap...like $29 on sale. Probably not the best quality, but might meet your needs for those summer temps we get around here!

Just moments ago I ordered a warm weather long sleeve top from Ground Effect in New Zealand:

under the FAQ's section for this shirt it says it is SPF 25-30, depending on color. I got the limelight, because I like to be visible at all times. The price works out pretty decently from NZ to US$, and shipping isn't astronomical. I read an earlier post somewhere on TE about their Jitterbug shorts, which I also ordered. Both items came to about $121 US$.

I'll report back on the shirt when I get it.

Thanks Sara. I haven't yet been to Performance. I'll have to check them out!

CW-X is supposed to be coming out with SPF 50 running tights sometime this year. They already have them in cold-weather tights, but I'd like to check out these new ones and see if they might be more doable for warm weather. I've e-mailed them to see when they might be hitting the stores. I'll post when I hear or see anything.
